1 Elijah Clarke was not at King's Mountain but a number of the men who served under him claimed to have been at King's Mountain. Any of Clarke's men who were at King's Mountain are most likely to have been under the command of Joseph McDowell, Isaac Shelby and/or James Williams, all of whom had cooperated with Clarke in prior engagements.

2 Thomas Sumter was not at King's Mountain. He was in Hillsborough NC meeting with SC Governor John Rutledge. He had turned over command of his men to Col. Edward Lacey and Col. William Hill. Hill, however, was still recovering from wounds and he, in turn, has turned over command of his men to Col. James Hawthorn.

3 I have noted in brackets the county and/or state from which the veteran is believed to have served; the commander under whom he states he served, if any; and my

guess as to which commander at KM the veteran is most likely to have served under. WC=William Campbell; JS=John Sevier; IS=Isaac Shelby; JM=Joseph

McDowell; and JW=James Williams. 4 This man says he was at Kings Mountain under Capt. James Tigert [a/k/a James Ligert James Taggert, James Tygert] and Col. John Hampton of the NC Militia.

Evidence that such a unit was under the command of Col. James Williams of SC is given in the SC Indent records in an indent given to Gabriel Anderson SC180 who

received an indent from Major John Hampton for goods taken on October 7, 1780 pursuant to the orders of Col. Williams. 5 This man is unlikely to have been at KM. His application has conflicting statements in that he says he was wounded at Gates Defeat and stayed in the hospital some time recovering.

The next battle he lists after making this statement is the battle of Cowan's ford. He lists KM among the battles he participated in without giving any specifics or stating under whom he served.

6 Moss says Bean was under Elijah Clarke at KM but Clarke was not at KM (interestingly, Moss himself does not list Clarke on his roster of KM participants).

7 It is not clear why Moss listed him as a Whig at KM since he states in his PA that he fought at KM as a Loyalist. Prior to and after KM he fought as a Whig.

8 This applicant claims to have been severely wounded at Camden (4 wounds); could he have recovered in time to have been at KM? 9 Moss speculates that he was under JW at KM.

10 The applicant's son applied for the pension in his own right, but there was no provision for pensions benefiting children of veterans. 11 He is included because he is listed by Bobby Moss, but in his own memoir, Hill says that because he was still recovering from his wounds, he gave command of his men to Hawthorn.

Hill says he was with the second group of primarily foot militia that arrived after the battle was over.
