Iron Metabolism: Iron in the body is used primarily for Haemogolobin synthesis. Normal erythropoiesis requires 20-25 mg/day of iron.

Iron Stores: Body iron stores – 40-50mg Fe/kg. Stores are less in women than men.

Iron Compartments: Haemoglobin 30mg Fe/kg (2gm or 67%)

Myoglobin &

Enzymes (0.1 gm or 3.5%)

Storage Iron (1gm or 27%)

Higher in males.
