Dealing With Human Emotions

Genesis 4:1-8

Genesis 4:1-8

1Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.”

2Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord.

4Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering,

5but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.

6So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?

7If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”

8Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

Introduction:

• This is the most difficult message in this series so far?

• Because it deals with our emotions.

• Preaching deals with emotions, but when preaching questions our emotions it is hard to receive.

• Today is one of those messages…..

[pic]

1. God Created Man With Emotions.

A. God is emotional

B. God made us in His image!

C. The issue is not whether we are or are not emotional, but, how we

deal with our emotions!

[pic]

Page 2

2. Our Text Reveals At Least Three Prevalent Emotions:

1st Emotion - Rejection

In Verse 4 & 5 … The Lord respected (received) Abel’s offering BUT He

rejected Cain’s offering

In Verse 7(a) … God told Cain that if he gave the right offering he would be

accepted and not rejected.

A. God dealt with Cain’s feeling of Rejection.

B. God revealed to Cain that he needed to deal with his rejection.

C. Cain let the rejection get the best of him!

D. Rejection comes from Envy; Jealousy; and Covetousness

• School Grades, Job promotion

• Athletic Abilities, Recognition for work done

• Looks, Ability, etc.

[pic]

2nd Emotion – Bitterness

In Verse 5 … Cain’s countenance fell

In Verse 6 … God ask Cain why his countenance had fallen?

A. Cain allowed something to happen inside that showed on the outside

B. God (others) recognized it

C. It was bitterness and it kept growing

D. The Apostle Paul told us about bitterness in Hebrews 12….

Page 3

Hebrews 12:14 – 17

14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:

15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled;

16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.

17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

• People allow one little thing to grow inside until it destroys them.

• Bitterness has a “root” - it grows!

• Cain let it grow…

• If we are not careful, bitterness with grow inside us…

[pic]

3rd Emotion – Anger

In Verse 5 … Cain is Very Angry…

A. Cain repressed his anger

In Verse 8 … he talked with Abel… in the field

• If he was angry enough to kill Able, why was he talking with him in the field?

In Verse 6 … God asked Cain why he was so angry

B. Cain expressed his anger through his countenance because of

bitterness

charah, khaw-raw' to glow or grow warm; to blaze up, be (wax) hot, be

incensed, kindle, be wroth.

[pic]

In Verse 8 … Cain Killed his brother, Abel, in Anger

Page 4

3. Anger Is An Emotion That Is Hard To Control!

A. In Verse 7 … God told Cain he should control his anger

Genesis 4:7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”

[pic]

…………..Sin Lies at the door - Verse 7

rabats, raw-bats' to crouch on all four legs folded, like a recumbent animal; to brood, lurk, to crouch down, make to rest, to sit.

[pic]

………..Verse 7 - Paraphrased by ME….

You think you would feel better if you were only accepted and not angry, but even when you feel accepted and are not angry sin is at the door and it tries to destroy you, but you must control yourself and rule over your emotions.

B. We Must Learn How To Control Our Anger……

1) Stages of Anger:

o 1. Mild Frustration and Irritation; 2. Rage; 3. Murder

[pic]

Anger can destroy in a moment a relationship that has taken years to build!

[pic]

2) Everyone experiences Anger: - 2 KINDS of Anger……

3) Controlling Anger

• We can get mad with God, parents, children, our mate, our boss, the pastor, those in authority, etc.

• We can turn our anger toward our mate, our children, our friends, strangers, or ourselves.

• Men get angry an average of 6 times a week

• Women get angry an average of 3 times per week

[pic]

- Only 25% of anger has to do with the current situation.

- Past hurts and disappointments make up 75% of expressed anger!

[pic]

4) False Expectations Cause Anger

• When expectations are unreasonable Anger is born…..

• Waiting and waiting in line.

• You get in the shortest line and wait longer than the long line at the other counter.

• You get in the wrong line in slow heavy traffic.

[pic]

5) Selfishness Causes Anger - This is the hard one!!!

• I want what I want and I want it now!

• I want others to respond like I want them to!

• I want everyone to know that I am always right!

• I want God to take care of everyone else so I can be happy!

• Everyone should like me!

• No one should disagree with me!

• I’m right and he is wrong!

Page 6

[pic]

- If you found a lump in your body you would go to the doctor and have test and a biopsy. You would tell the doctor to get rid of it!

- Let’s identify and get rid of the causes of anger inside us today!

[pic]

……………………. 2 Questions:

1 - How many of you have been hurt by someone? - Raise your hand!

2 - If you have hurt someone else, raise your hand!

……………. If so many are hurt by others, Who is doing the hurting?

[pic]

6) We need to stop Anger! - Anger is one letter from D-ANGER!

Psalm 37:8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret—it only causes harm.

Galatians 5:19 – 21

19Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,

20idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,

21envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

James 1:19 & 20 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

Ephesians 4:26, 27, 31, & 32

26“Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

27nor give place to the devil.

31Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.

32And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Page 7

7) Dealing With Anger.

• Most psychologist maintain that Anger is a secondary emotion that is derived from another emotion.

• NOTHING “makes” a person angry. The individuals interpretation of the circumstances around him builds the emotion of anger.

• NOTHING in any psychological test or evaluation indicates that we have the build up of anger inside us and that every once in a while we must let it out!

• For Anger to remain alive, it must be nourished and fed by continually dwelling on the emotions or situation that drives one to anger.

[pic]

8) Anger Will Destroy You

a) Physically

• Ulcers, Nausea, Vomiting, Head Aches, Hives, Sweating Hands, Asthma, Diarrhea, High Blood Pressure, Over & Under Eating, etc.

• Dr. S. I. McMillen in his study of diseases suggests that there are 57 diseases that are made worse by angry emotions.

b) Spiritually – When Anger is inside it comes out!

Luke 6:45 (NKJV) A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

[pic]

9) Anger Must Be Confessed

a) Confession brings forgiveness

b) Attacks stop and reconciliation and restoration begin

Page 8

4. God Gave Us Human Emotions But We Must Not Let

Them Control Us!

A. Rejection, Bitterness, and Anger will destroy you!
