1. Neurooncology – 2 hours

Classification, incidence and symptomatology of the tumors of nervous system. Neuroradiology of brain tumors (plain radiography, angiography – AG, CT, MRI). Therapy (surgical approaches, microsurgery, radiosurgery, radio and chemotherapy).

2. Surgical therapy of the diseases of brain vessels – 2 hours

Ethiology of vascular diseases of the brain. Clinical mainifestations. Diagnosis and therapy of:

- saccular aneurysms and subarachnoid haemorrhage (CT, lumbar punction, AG, transcranial Doppler, microsurgery, timing of surgery, endovascular surgery)

- arterio-venous malformations of the brain and spinal cord (embryology of brain vesseles, microsurgery, endovascular neurosurgery, radiosurgery)

- spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage (surgery, stereotactic evacuation, trombolysis)

- ischemic stroke (arterial by-pass, encephalomyosynangiosis)

3. Head injury – 2 hours

Injuries of the scalp. Fractures of the skull (convexity, skull base). Open and closed head injuries. Frontobasal injuries. Posttraumatic cerebrospinal fluid fistulas.

Pathophysiology and diagnosis of closed head injuries (cerebral concussion and contusion, difuse axonal injury, brain edema, traumatic intracranial haemorrhages – epidural, subdural and intracerebral haematoma), increased intracranial pressure, transtentorial herniation.

Indication and techniques of surgery in craniocerebral trauma.

4. Spinal pathology – 2 hours

Pathophysiology and clinical symptomatology of diseases of spinal cord and spinal nerves – degenerative diseases of the spine (radicular syndromes, myelopathy) – tumors (extradural, intradural, extramedullar, intramedullar), trauma (mechanisms, classifications, diagnosis of the injuries of spinal cord). Therapy (surgical and non surgical methods).

5. Congenital and developmental anomalies of nervous system – 1 hour

Hydrocephalus – pathophysiology, diagnosis, therapy. Craniostenosis, microcephaly (differential diagnosis, therapy). Meningocele, meningomyelocele (principles of therapy).

Inflammatory diseases – ½ hour (brain abscess, meningitis, subdural empyema, spinal epidural abscess) – diagnosis and therapy.

Stereotactic neurosurgery – ½ hour

Principles of stereotactic surgical techniques and their indications. New trends in neurosurgery.

Practical courses

Clinical examination of neurosurgical patient, pathophysiological analyses of the disease. Lumbar puncture – practical demonstration.

Neuroradiology – demonstration of characteristics scans of CT, MR, AG, perimyelography (PMG), plain radiography.

Basal surgical intracranial and intraspinal approaches (craniotomy, laminectomy) – demostration of surgical instruments and techniques. Demonstration of videos (Head injuries, Laminectomy, Hydrocephalus, Microsurgery of saccular aneurysms,

Stereotactic neurosurgery, Microsurgery of brain tumors).

Practical demonstration of retrogasserian electrotermocoagulation in trigeminal neuralgia.

State examination (part of general surgery)

Mechanisms of head injuries and their classification

Fractures of the skull

Posttraumatic cerebrospinal fluid fistulas

Brain concussion and contusion

Posttraumatic increased intracranial pressure

Epidural haematoma

Subdural haematoma

Spinal cord injuries

Spontaneous intracranial haemorrhages
