From the Principal
We've entered the quick sprint before Winter Break -- 2 weeks to go! hope you are staying dry and warm during these wet and windy days. As we approach the mid-year point, it is important to remind your student (s) to stay focused and productive at school. Many students have been placed on academic/attendance probation and while the social aspect of school is important, we exist to move students toward graduation and when/if they are not making adequate academic progress, it is time to reevaluate whether or not Emerson High School is the right fit. If you're interested in a scheduled progress meeting with your student and his/her advisor, please contact them directly; staff emails are on the last page of the newsletter.

TOO SICK FOR SCHOOL?
Flu season is in full swing, accompanied by colds and other illnesses. If a student feels perfectly fine or totally awful, it's a pretty easy decision to make whether or not they should go to school on a given day.
However, on some days, it's more of a judgment call. Is that cough or runny nose a problem? Has your child recovered sufficiently from the flu to go back to school? Can they still spread their illness to other students?
If you student will be missing school, remember to call that absence in on the EMHS attendance line within 48 hours:

KIRKLAND CHAMBER FIELD TRIP
Emerson High School students joined three other LWSD high schools to take a tour of Google Headquarter in Kirkland, and were treated to lunch with the Greater Kirkland Chamber of Commerce at the Woodmark Hotel on November 14th.
The Chamber Business Luncheon is their main monthly meeting. This month the Chamber welcomed students from the LWSD as part of their Youth Development Program. This program allows students to tour various offices in the Kirkland community and then join the Chamber for their monthly meeting. They will get a chance to meet and make con-
nections with business people from the Kirkland community while listening to a speaker who is an expert Technology Specialist.
EMHS students who went with Dan Kaufman were Marcus Alonzo, Marco Vazquez, Sasha Khatchadourian, Kip Yeltsov, Sam Yo, Allison Satalich, and Tyler Kessinger. We heard that they thought the field trip was awesome!
MUSEUM OF POP CULTURE AND BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION FIELD TRIP
Seventeen Art, Leadership, and Student Store students went on a field trip Nov. 21st with Evelyn and Justin to view an exhibition on Minecraft and other areas of the Museum of
Pop Culture. They also viewed the "We The People" exhibit at the Gates Foundation.
EARLY GRADUATE
Please congratulate Alice Clark -- she is our first early graduate for the 2019-20 school year. We look forward to seeing her graduate with our other graduates in June!

WINTER WEATHER TIPS FOR STUDENT METRO RIDERS
Winter weather in this area can make travel very unpredictable. Many LWSD students rely on Metro to get them to and from school. Metro would like you to be reminded of possible delays, route changes or cancellations because of winter weather.
When waiting for a bus in these conditions, the best place to catch the bus is along a major arterial. Wait at the top or bottom of hills, and wait back from the curb. Please remember that Metro buses may be more crowded than usual and not always on schedule, so dress warmly and be prepared for delays.
Bus snow reroutes are posted on Metro's Riderlink web site at http:// transit. or the 24 hour Rider Line at 206-553-3000.
INCLEMENT WEATHER CLOSURE INFORMATION
IF LWSD IS ON LATE START, EMHS WILL BE ONE HOUR LATE--STARTING AT 9:00 AM.
EMERGENCY OPERATING SCHEDULE INFORMATION CAN BEST BE OBTAINED BY AREA RADIO, TV, OR LWSD WEB SITE WWW..

HIV/AIDS PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT
Each year, in accordance with the AIDS Omnibus Bill (E2SSB 6221), the LWSD is required to provide lessons on the life-threatening dangers of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and its prevention in grades 5-12. Thirty days prior to teaching these lessons, we are also required to provide a parent presentation concerning the curricula and materials that will be used for such education.
This year's presentation for parents will be held on December 16 from 7?8 p.m. in the Board Room at the Resource Center. Materials for preview and waiver forms will be available at the parent presentation.
OPOID ABUSE AWARENESS & PREVENTION STRATEGIES

FAMILY VACATIONS
Taking vacations during the school year can be convenient and fun for the family; however these lost days can cause children to miss valuable learning.
Here's How You Can Help: ? Keep a copy of the school calendar and make
sure that you schedule your vacations during the year so that children miss as little school as possible. Winter Break (December), Mid-Winter Break (February) and Spring Break (April) are all great times to take trips during the school year. ? If you must take your child out early or bring them back late, please contact your child's teacher before you leave on the trip. It is the responsibility of the parent to make arrangements for keeping upto-date with schoolwork during such absences.
