Indicate for flow cytometry or r/o lymphoma on the form.Flow Cytometry identifies specific cell types by locating unique markers on the cell membrane of fresh tissue cells. This test gives the immunophenotype of lymphomas. CLINICAL DATAInclude pertinent clinical history of the patient on the requisition.COLLECTION INSTRUCTIONSTissue samples should optimally be 0.2 to 1.0 gm (0.5 x 0.5 x 0.2 cm)SPECIAL TIMINGDeliver the specimen to the Histology Laboratory no later than 2pm, Monday through Friday.* Call Medspeed at 877-851-3275 to schedule a STAT pickup.Call the Histology lab at 248-652-5260 x 2311 to notify the staff that a fresh specimen/specimen for potential flow cytometry is being sent, at least one day ahead of time. Call the histology lab also after the specimen has been picked up by the courier so we will know it is on its way over. CONTAINER TYPE & PRESERVATIVE ***NO FORMALIN***Selected tissue should be placed in a 50 ml tube of RPMI flow cytometry media OR placed in a sterile container and covered with enough sterile saline.LABELING REQUIREMENTLabel the specimen container with both the patient’s name and specimen source. Label the outside of the bag that is being transported with ‘STAT’ on it, in red. STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE/SPECIAL DELIVERYThe specimen should be kept cool during transportUNACCEPTABLE CONDITIONS/CAUSES FOR REJECTIONSpecimens received without adequate information or with insufficient, questionable or misleading labeling cannot be examined and processed until the deficiency is corrected. The department will make every effort to have the deficiency corrected as quickly as possible. *The laboratory needs to receive the specimen no later than 2pm because the last Fedex pickup for the hospital is 3:30pm daily. If the pathologist determines the specimen needs to be sent out for flow cytometry studies, it needs to have paperwork filled out, the specimen packaged up and delivered to the front of the hospital by 3:30pm. ................
