Student Council promotes a variety of activities for the entire student body and strives to foster a positive climate throughout the school. Among these include Red Ribbon Week, the PHILO canned food drive, the Green2Green project, fall and spring spirit weeks, the Valentine’s Day Dance, Movie Nights, the Spirit Dance, and Teacher Appreciation Week. Council members commit to membership in the fall and officer elections are held each May for the following school year. Since the group is starting up again this year, we have been a little slow in achieving some of our goals. Still, we are laying the foundation this year, and next year will be even better!Jazz BandFee: 0Advisor: Mr. MasseyJazz Band is an audition only class open to ANY 7th??and 8th?grade student and also those who are in band, orchestra, and choir. The students are exposed to a different element of music, and they are given a variety of performing opportunities. Jazz Band meets every day during a student’s PRIDE class. The card games played are Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. Games, matches, tournaments and structure for trades are provided. Students use social skills and strategy. Builders ClubFee: $5Advisor: Mrs. Scoufis Builder's Club meets every 2nd/4th Tues. in the Learning Lab 3-4PM Builder's Club is a student service club sponsored by the Kiwanis organization.? The goal of the club is to help prepare students to be engaged members of their local and global communities by providing service to those in need, enriching the lives of those around them, and growing as individuals through leadership.? The club plans at least one service project each semester in each of three categories including Hands-On service, Fundraising and Philanthropy and Awareness-Building.? A faculty advisor is present for all meetings and the club is further supported by a member from the Key Club which is the high school partner organization.YearbookFee: 0Advisor: Ms. Sheldon and Mrs. MailanderYearbook meets every Wednesday 3-4 in the PC LabIf you are interested in joining yearbook come to a meeting. This staff creates a hardbound yearbook that is over 80 pages. They must be dedicated to meeting deadlines throughout the year. They will design the cover, the page templates and then the majority of work will consist of taking digital pictures of athletics, students daily routines, clubs, and special events that occur after school. Team Leads will be assigned and all students will create the pages online after school. Equipment: Students may check out a digital camera with their Parent/Guardian’s permission and use computers at school. Students generally use their cell phone to take pictures, borrow a camera from home to take pictures for the yearbook and we have a few cameras students can check out from LEMS to cover their assigned events. Yearbook photos and pages are all submitted on-line: students that have internet access, may upload photos from home. Destination ImaginationFee: Even though there isn't an entrance fee, there may be some costs for materials once students start working on their project and will be the responsibility of the participants. (This won't ever be a huge amount; most projects have a maximum of a $150 budget, total, and split between the entire team)Advisor: Mr. LeflerDestination Imagination meets every Thurs. in rm. 121 from 3-4/5PMDestination Imagination combines creative problem solving, teamwork, and fun into a unique opportunity for middle school students! D.I. is open to any 6th, 7th, and 8th grade student, and incorporates the talents of actors, writers, builders, artists and more. Teams of up to seven students each work to solve a long-term “problem” as well as an instant challenge for the early spring tournament. Winning teams have the opportunity to compete at the State and Global levels.Drama ClubFee: 0/$25 for those selected in productionsAdvisor: Ms. DixonThe Erwin Drama Club generally produces a fall play and spring musical each year depending on the resources available. Auditions are open to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Students in the play or musical act create props, programs, scenery, and provide their own costumes. Some past productions include: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Middle School Dating Game, American Idle, Murdering the Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Beauty and the Beast, and Annie. Rehearsals for the fall play and spring musical occur after school on select days of the week prior to the productions.National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)Fee: $10Advisor: Mrs. TuemerNJHS meets 1st/3rd Tues. in the LibraryThis is a nationally recognized honor society for middle school level students. Membership is open to 2nd semester 6th graders, 7th graders, and 8th graders. Membership selection is a rigorous process, as students must meet minimum expectations in 5 areas: scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship and character. Induction ceremonies are held each April with officer elections in May. Society members must be dedicated to a significant time commitment.MESA rcFoam FightersFee: $25Advisor: Mr. MarshallMEASA stands for Math, Engineering, Science, and Achievement. Students will learn and study the physics of flight such as hydrofoils, aerodynamics, center of gravity, drag, lift, and thrust through the use of RC Foam aircrafts. Student’s mathematical skills will be applied by use of measurement as well as science skills through the use of RC electronics. The creative opportunity is endless and the boost of confidence is insurmountable when the maiden flight of your own creation is a success. The choir is open to any 7th and 8th grade student at Erwin. In addition to performing at the choir concerts, the honor choir typically performs for several other events throughout the year. The honor choir meets in an ensemble that rehearses before school several days a week.Spelling BeeFee: Transportation by parents to Spelling BeesAdvisor: TBA-(To (Bee) Announced :)Students prepare for district competition, either individually or with a parent-coached group on a weekly basis. The district spelling bee is held on a Saturday in February and consists of a written test followed by oral rounds for the top students. Opportunities exist for Erwin’s Chess Club to compete against clubs at other district middle schools as well as for individuals to compete in one or two district tournaments each year.Math ClubFee: 0Advisor: Mrs. ElwoodMath Club meets: TBAMath Club is for students who love math-and those who don’t! This group meets weekly throughout the school year, with a variety of options available to participants. Students who need help with math homework and concepts may come for support from adults and other students with good understanding of those concepts and skills. Students who enjoy math may come and tutor other students. Another option for students who are passionate about math is to work on challenging, in-depth problems that stretch their brains. Some of the Math Club participants will be invited to compete in face-to-face challenges (such as MathCounts, which holds a regional competition in the spring) or possibly in online contests.FLL ( First Lego League) Lego RoboticsFee: $25. (Scholarships are available for those families who qualified for Free & Reduced)Advisor: Mr. & Mrs. MarvinRobotics meets every Thurs. in the PC Lab 6-8PMFLL LEGO Robotics is a great activity for budding engineers and computer programmers, as well as anyone who enjoys building with LEGOs. This activity is concentrated in the fall, with teams forming in the first few weeks of school and going to competition in November, with the state tournament held in December. Teams of five to ten participants build a robot, program it to accomplish several “missions,” as well as researching and making a presentation related to the theme for that year. The focus of the challenge is on creative problem solving and programming. No prior experience is required to participate (or to be a parent coach).No Place for Hate?Fee: 0Advisor: Mrs. AdamsNo Place For Hate meets every 2nd/4th Thurs. in the Teacher’s Lounge from 2:47-3:30PMNo Place for Hate is a student leadership club that aims to promote respect for individual and group differences and promote a positive school climate. Student members typically attend a training titled Becoming an Ally: Interrupting Name Calling and Bullying at the start of the school year and have opportunities to attend other trainings. They lead projects throughout the year that focus on creating a culture of respect and safety for all Erwin students.ForensicsFee: $30 (Scholarships are available for those families who qualified for Free & Reduced)Advisor: TBAForensics meets TBAIf you like to talk, act, speak, and have fun, Forensics is the place for you! Erwin’s Forensics team participates in the National Junior Forensics League, which promotes interscholastic debate, oratory, public speaking, and interpretation of literature by encouraging the spirit of fellowship and offering opportunities to compete and achieve recognition via forensics tournaments in Middle School. The NJFL empowers students to become effective communicators, ethical individuals, critical thinkers, and leaders in a democratic society. Students practice weekly with the team’s parent coach(es) and attend Friday evening tournaments around the region (Loveland, Fort Collins, Greeley) every month or two. Sports: Competitive and IntramuralCross CountryFee: $50Competitive running from mid-August until mid-October. Students will compete with other schools and participate in end of the season tournaments.SwimmingFee: $50Competitive swimming from mid-August until mid-October. Some fall sports, swimming, girls’ volleyball, and cross-country begin practicing before school starts in the fall. Try-outs are closed 10 days following the opening dates.
