4286250635000Magnets are Magnificent!-2730503873500right54737000Hi everyone! Let’s explore with magnets! I have some really cool magnet kits that I brought home from my classroom. 41656017399000See how some of them have an “N” and an “S” on the sides? Just like our planet Earth, (Which is actually one giant magnet!) 368935030353048514002857505969000328295all magnets have a north and south pole. You know that saying, “opposites attract?” Well, with magnets, it is definitely true! Look at my green and yellow magnets. The two north poles (yellow sides) push apart, and the two south poles (green sides) push apart. To push apart means to “repel.” But, the green and yellow side stick right together! That’s a north next to a south pole! They are like best friends! When two things stick together, they “attract.” right000Now, let’s get started on YOUR science adventure!-2540004527550051581052098675The best part about this science investigation is, you probably have all the materials you need, right around your home! The best place I know to look for magnets is… our refrigerator! Woah, look at that, lucky we have magnets to hang up all of our family artwork! Ask Mom or Dad if you could borrow a couple of refrigerator magnets like these, and then start exploring! Here are someinvestigationsyou could try…-177800212090Do magnets attract to other magnets? If they do, in what ways? If your refrigerator magnets don’t have their north and south poles labeled, do you think you could figure out which sides are the opposite poles? (Hint- if two magnets stick to each other, remember that OPPOSITES ATTRACT! ) 4965700291465Go on a magnetic hunt! What stuff in your house will a magnet attract? Look around for things that you would like to use! Try your kitchen drawers, your toy box, or tools in the garage. Remember, ask your parents first! Place a refrigerator magnet on each item, and see if it attracts the object and sticks to it! left302260Can magnets attract items through water? Check by putting some items that you have found in a bowl of water, then slowly lower your magnet down in the water until it is close to your object.4885690381000Do magnets attract through other objects? Yes! But, how strong is your magnet? Can it still attract to an object through one piece of paper? How about 2 papers? Check out the magnets from my teacher kit! They are strong enough to even attract through my hand! Wow! -33655063500Try this magic trick! Make a paper clip move “all by itself!” Put a paper on the table, and put a paper clip on top of it. Then hold a magnet under the paper with your hand. Slide the magnet around till it “catches” the clip through the paper! Then, slowly, move the magnet, and watch the paper clip dance around the page! Cool! 522605016954500Can you make a magnet chain? Try this… Put a paper clip on a magnet. It attracts, right? That is because the magnet will attract things made of iron. Now, try to gently add a paper clip to the other end, and see if the attraction is strong enough to hold both clips, like a chain! See how many clips you can get to hold! 402590021590038989001447165Aren’t magnets magnificent? Check out some other fun videos that investigate magnetism here!
