GENERAL INFORMATION

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:

Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology has been invited to participate in Japan’s Super Science High School Student Fair. A Super Science High School (SSH) is a high school designated by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to focus on science and mathematics education and foster next-generation human resources in science and technology competing globally. The Super Science High school (SSH) Student Fair, co-organized by MEXT and JST, brings students of SSHs from all over Japan and the world to participate in the fair and make posters and/or oral presentations on the results of their project studies. Up to three RMSST students with strong research projects will be selected to travel with a faculty member chaperone to Kobe, Japan.

SELECTION COMMITTEE:

The selection committee will meet to review applications submitted by RMSST Sophomores and Juniors, conduct individual interviews, review student transcripts and discipline records, and select a maximum of 3 students from the Class of 2018 and 2019. RMSST is required to bring a minimum of two students so the selection process will only move forward if at least two qualified students apply.

TRAVEL DATES:

A complete itinerary will be given to selected students. These dates are subject to change based on travel arrangements that will be made upon selection; however, all applicants should plan to travel from August 6th through August 13th.

FUNDING:

The cost of four nights of accommodation, meal, and local transportation (between airport and the hotel) is covered by SSH. Selected students will be required to pay all of the international travel expenses associated with the trip which is estimated to be $2500 based on current plane ticket and hotel prices for an additional night.

Selected students will need to make a $1500 deposit by June 1st. The balance, estimated to be $1000, will be due July 1st. Once plane tickets are purchased on June 1st students will be responsible for the balance even if they are unable to attend.

TRANSPORTATION:

Common airline carrier, public transportation, train, bus, subway

HOUSING & LOCATION:

The selected students will be hosted by the Japanese Fair organizers at a hotel for four nights. The Rockdale group will stay for an additional night at the hotel due to travel timing.

Sunday, August 6th

• Meet at airport at 10am to Leave ATL to Osaka-Kix Airport, Japan

Flight time 13hr 59min (Maximum of one carry on and one checked bag)

Monday, August 7th

• Arrive in Osaka

• Transfer to the hotel

Tuesday, August 8th

• Orientation and Welcome Session

Wednesday, August 9th

• Participation in SSH Students Fair 2016 

Thursday, August 10th  

• Participation in SSH Students Fair 2016 

Friday, August 11th

• Excursion to neighboring facilities (Details will be announced later)

Saturday, August 12th

• Leave Kobe for Atlanta

• Flight time 12hr 33min (Maximum of one carry on and one checked bag)

Sunday, August 13th

• Arrive home - am

SELECTION PROCESS

STEP 1 – PREREQUISITES FOR APPLICATION

Please read and check this list carefully. In order to qualify for application, you must be:

o A current 10th or 11th grade student at RMSST (Class of 2018 or 2019)

o Advanced to at least Regional Science and Engineering Fair with your 2016-2017 project

o If taking research next year; has an approved research plan for 2017-2018 school year

o Earned only A’s and B’s for each semester you have taken research

o Available to travel abroad to Kobe, Japan from August 6th - August 13th

o Already have a passport or willing to apply for an expedited passport immediately upon acceptance.

o Able to pay the expenses associated with the trip (estimated at $2500 total). Selected students will need to make a $1500 deposit by June 1st. The balance, estimated to be $1000, will be due July 1st.

o Available to attend a trip planning meeting on May 23rd

o Willing to dedicate a minimum of 2 hours each week throughout the summer to learn basic Japanese language skills (kanji and hiragana)

o Willing to dedicate a minimum of 2 to 3 hours editing their Research poster

o Willing to accept full responsibility for obtaining and completing assignments from all teachers missed during the trip

o Willing to follow all RCHS, RMSST, and RCPS school rules and regulations.

STEP 2 – APPLICATION

o Complete, sign, and return the application with 4 hard copies of a poster summarizing your 2016-2017 research project (printed ‘scale to fit page’) and your 2017-2018 Research Plan if available.

o Return it to the Magnet Office by 3:00 p.m. on May, 17, 2017.

o Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted

STEP 3 – INTERVIEWS

o 5-minute interviews will be scheduled for those students who make it through the first round of the selection process (fall semester grades, GPA, teacher/coach/sponsor recommendations, discipline records, attendance records)

o Interviews take place during research classes on May 18th and 19th if needed.

o For your interview, you must be prepared to answer questions from the panel regarding your research project and interest in the program.

o Interview times will be assigned after all applications have been received.

STEP 5 – SELECTION

o All applicants will be notified of final selection on Monday, May 22nd.

o A maximum of 3 students will be selected. The SSH program requires a minimum of two students attend from the school, so the program will only move forward if a minimum of two qualified applicants participate.

o A meeting for selected participants will be held immediately after dismissal on Wednesday, May 24th.

If you are not a US citizen, it is your responsibility to determine if additional paperwork is necessary for traveling in and out of Japan (Visa, etc.).
