Illinois Security Freeze Process Experian

Illinois Security Freeze Process Experian

You have a right to place a "security freeze" on your credit report, which will prohibit us from releasing any information in your credit report without your express authorization, except to those with whom you have an existing account or a collection agency acting on behalf of the existing account, for purposes of reviewing (account maintenance, monitoring, credit line increases and account upgrades and enhancements) or collecting the account. Your information also may be used for the purposes of prescreening as provided for by the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, even if a security freeze is on the report. A security freeze is designed to prevent credit, loans, and services from being approved in your name without your consent; however, using a security freeze may delay, interfere with, or prohibit the timely approval of any subsequent requests or applications regarding a new loan, credit, mortgage, insurance, government services or payments, rental housing, employment, investment, license, cellular phone, utilities, digital signature, Internet credit card transaction, or other services, including an extension of credit at point of sale.

The fee for placing a security freeze on a credit report is $10. If you are a victim of identity theft and submit a valid police report, investigative report, or complaint with a law enforcement agency about the unlawful use of your identifying information, the fee will be waived. If you are 65 years of age or older the fee will be waived. If you are an active duty military service member who has submitted a copy of your orders calling you into service or extending your service, there is no fee. If you are 65 years of age or older, there is no fee. To request a security freeze, log on to freeze or send all of the following via certified mail to Experian Security Freeze, P.O. Box 9554, Allen, TX 75013: full name, with middle initial and generation, such as JR, SR, II, III, etc.; current mailing address and previous addresses for the past two years; Social Security number; and date of birth (month, day and year). In addition, enclose one copy of a government issued identification card, such as a driver's license, or state ID card, etc., and one copy of a utility bill, bank or insurance statement, etc. Make sure that each copy is legible (enlarge if necessary), displays your name and current mailing address, and the date of issue (statement dates must be recent). We are unable to accept credit card statements, voided checks, lease agreements, magazine subscriptions or postal service forwarding orders as proof. To protect your personal identification information, Experian does not return correspondence sent to us. Be sure to include the $10 fee, a valid law enforcement report or complaint, or copy of military

orders, or indicate that you are 65 years of age or older and live in Illinois to qualify for the fee to be waived. We will send you a confirmation notice once the security freeze has been added, and you will be given a personal identification number (PIN) that will be required in order to remove the freeze temporarily (in order to apply for credit or for any transaction that requires that another party access your personal credit report) or permanently.

To temporarily remove a security freeze for a period of time in order to apply for credit or for any transaction that requires that another party access your personal credit report, log on to freeze or call 1 888 EXPERIAN (1 888 397 3742), then enter your identification information and PIN, and select the number of days that you wish the freeze to be removed. Illinois Security Freeze Process

Trans Union

A Credit Freeze, also known as a Security Freeze, is a way for you to have maximum control over access to your credit.

Placing a freeze on your credit report will prevent lenders and others from accessing your TransUnion credit report in response to a new credit application. With a security freeze in place, even you will need to take special steps when you wish to apply for any type of credit.

You will need to place a security freeze separately with each of the three major credit reporting companies if you want the freeze on all of your credit files. There may be a fee for this service based on state law; see our chart below for further details. A security freeze remains on your credit file until you remove it or choose to lift it temporarily when applying for credit or credit-dependent services.

When should I consider a security freeze? You want maximum control over access to your credit report. You are concerned that you might become a victim of fraud/ID theft. A freeze is a drastic solution, but can prevent a credit report from being released in response to a new credit application, so you will need to plan ahead and lift the freeze before applying for new credit.

A fraud alert is a good alternative for many consumers. It directs the credit report recipient to contact the consumer at a number the consumer provides before granting credit.

TransUnion will allow any consumer in any state to add, lift or remove a security freeze. TransUnion allows consumers in any state to add, lift or remove a freeze online, by phone or by mail.

Victims of ID Theft should submit their request, along with acceptable documentation, to TU via mail. TransUnion does not charge victims of identity theft who want to add or lift a security freeze. TransUnion does not charge any consumer for security freeze removals.

When a state allows for different amounts to be charged for a lift for a specific party versus a lift for a period of time, TransUnion will charge the lesser of these amounts for either type of lift.

TransUnion does not currently charge a consumer for replacement passwords or personally identifiable numbers (PIN).
