Sports Medicine Leadership Projects

Participating in leadership activities is a requirement of Career and Technical Education Classes in accordance with RCW 28C.04.100 Career and technical education -Plans -Standards - Technical assistance - Leadership development. All the activities MUST be completed within the semester you are enrolled. If the leadership activity takes place outside of this class you must provide written documentation from the adult leader of the program. Parents may not provide the documentation for the leadership activity, unless of course they are the adult leader. Leadership projects can be turned in at any time. This is an assignment that required you to develop your leadership skills; you must do the work outside of class and get the required signatures. Leadership points are a part of your grade.

Promoting life-long healthy habits, community involvement, and going above and beyond the norm are some of the main goals for this class. All projects are designed to reinforce classroom activities through individual application, practice and processing of unit skills.

• ALL PROJECTS MUST BE typed and submitted in Google Classroom.

• 100 points per semester.

40 points are due on November 10th

60 points are due on January 23rd

General

1. Athletic training room observations (1 pt per 30 min observation; max 50 pts)

2. Two absences or less per semester (2 tardies=1 absence) (20 pts.)

2. Actively participate in a school fundraiser. (Provide written documentation) (10 pts.)

3. Blood Drive (10 pts.)

4. Spirit Days (5 pts. per day – must see teacher that day)

5. Participate in a school sport (coach signature required) (10 pts)

6. Participate in a school play(s), pageant(s), band, orchestra, or choir performance. (instructor signature required) (10 pts)

7. Hold an office in any school leadership organization (advisor signature required) (5 pts)

8. Attend a student leadership organization State or Regional Conference. {advisor signature, date, and conference type required) (5 pts)

9. Bring verification from the blood bank and a brief (1/2 page) write up about how the experience went. (30 points) (Multiple times per semester allowed)

10. Visit the American Cancer Society, the Heart Association, the March of Dimes, the Snohomish County Health Department, or any agency that gives out information related to disease. Find out what resources are available. Write a one page paper on what you discovered about the agency and attach a pamphlet you pick up. (20 points) (1 time per semester allowed)

Exploring Careers

1. Conduct an interview/Job Shadow with any person who works in a health field that is NOT related to you. For this option you must meet with Mr. Mahler to verify it meets requirements and to get prior approval. No prior approval will mean no credit. Have a list of 10-15 questions ready before the interview. Transcribe your findings into a written report. Include the person’s name, job title, date, and time of interview. (TBD up to 100 points) SR and VS if done complete and sufficient time is spent learning about the field. If you choose not to write up the interview, have the person sign a piece of paper on letterhead stating that you conducted the interview. Have them include the date and total time of interview/job shadow. (20 points) SR and VS (Multiple times per semester allowed)

2. Coordinate a guest speaker to come in and speak about a current relevant topic we are discussing in the class. This project needs to be discussed with the teacher and coordinated to insure proper steps are being taken. The student will do most of the communication and set-up. (50 points)

(1 time per semester allowed)

3. Visit the Career Center ad take a Career Aptitude/Interest test. (5 pts)

4. Complete a career search or attend a career/college speaker (written documentation required) (10 pts)

5. Attend a career/college fair (written documentation required) (10 pts)

6. Write and submit a newspaper article to the Valhalla about CTE and how it prepares you for the future (15 pts)

Physical Health

1. Participate in a walkathon/marathon that is aiming to raise money toward any health concern. See teacher for approval, needs to take place during this class. You must complete a ½ page reflection about your experience. (25 points)

Community Service

1. Voluntary community service work (provide written documentation) (5 per hour, max 20)

2. Be an active member of Scouts, Explorer Scouts, or ROTC (provide written documentation from leader advisor or instructor) (15 pts)

3. Be an active member of a church youth group, choir, or community service organization. (Provide written documentation) (15 pts)

4. Actively participate in a school food drive. (Advisor signature required) (10 pts)

5. Participate in blood drive. (Advisor signature required) (10 pts)

6. Attend a student council meeting. (Advisor signature required) (5 pts)

7. Attend a School Board Meeting. (Provide written documentation) (10 pts)

8. Attend a city or county government meeting (provide written documentation) (10 pts)

9. Spend time at a senior center (provide written documentation) (10 pts per hour, up to 50)

10. Help with a community organized event (parade, cleanup, walkathon etc) (provide written documentation) (20 pts)

11. Write a letter to the editor about the CTE class you are taking and express your opinion about CTE classes. (15 pts)

Professional Development

1. Read a book about a leader or leadership and write a 250-word report (book(s) must be pre-approved by teacher). (30 pts)

2. NO disciplinary incidents, referrals, or disruptive behavior in any class. This can ONLY be applied at the end of the semester and will be verified by the main office. (20 pts)

Other

1. Pick a topic that we have discussed and learn it in more detail. You can either write a report on a topic or create a presentation (PowerPoint). You will need research the topic, get sources from a variety of places, and have a short interview with the teacher to discuss what you learned. See teacher for approval, needs to take place during this class. (TBD points) (Multiple times per semester allowed)

2. Other ideas- If you come up with an idea propose it to the teacher. Procedures and Points will be determined after discussing idea. (TBD points)
