OPTIC is a strategy to teach visual perspective. It is important for students to be able to analyze a visual to understand components of the course.
Procedure:
1) Teacher will go over the strategy with the students. The students will be writing the information and placing it in their strategy section of their notebook. (What is typed below the line is what the students will write)
2) Pass out the Photos Around the World Sheet. The teacher will then show the students 10 photos from around the world using the powerpoint. Students will need to answer the questions on the sheet about the photos.

The five letters in the word OPTIC (pertaining to the eye) provide a system for remembering the five steps for analyzing a visual or graphic (i.e. cartoons, pictures, graphs, and charts). As students view the graphic they may participate in a discussion, write a paragraph, and/.or complete a graphic.

Conduct a brief overview of the visual
P is for parts
Focus on the parts of the visual
Read all the labels
Notice any details that seem important
T is for title
Read the title of the visual for a clear understanding of the subject
(not all graphics will have a title)
I is for interrelationships
Use the title to help identify the main idea of the big umbrella that
connects the parts of the visual
C is for conclusion
Draw a conclusion about the visual as a whole
What does it mean? Why was it included?
Summarize the visual in a few sentences or a well constructed
paragraph
