Directions:

Part I

1. Explain credibility – believable or not

2. Discuss worksheet with students – they will be hearing testimony at the trial and need to take notes on the testimony in the box for the appropriate witness. Then they need to decide whether the testimony is credible or not. In the explanation box, students need to write down why they think the evidence and/or witness is credible or not.

3. Model Heck Tate’s testimony together.

4. Watch the rest of the testimony. After each witness, let students take notes on their form.

5. At the end they can decide on credibility and write down their explanations.

Part II

1. After reading chapter 21, give students the following prompt and criteria for the SCR or mini-essay:

• Essay – Prompt: Compare the results of the trial to what you think the verdict should have been from your evaluation of the evidence. Explain how class structure might have affected the jury’s verdict.

Criteria:

1. has a clear main idea

2. at least 2 paragraphs (one paragraph why he was guilty/not guilty, one on class structure)

3. 3 pieces of evidence from the trial

4. discuss the credibility of the evidence

5. include details about class structure in Maycomb

6. has a concluding statement
