GAME TIME: 3:00 pm

SERIES: Concordia leads 63-51

SERIES STARTED: 1929

LAST YEAR: Last year the Cobbers swept the series, winning 75-57 at home and then claiming a 87-66 victory in Winona. The 18-point win at home was highlighted by a 24-0 run by the Cobbers. The stretch lasted for eight minutes in the second half and turned a 45-41 nail-biter into a 69-41 blowout. Josh Downey led Concordia with 20 points. In the series finale in Winona, the Cobbers scored the first seven points in the game and led wire-to-wire. The key stat in the game was at the free throw line. Concordia made 31-of-37 (83.8%) free throw attempts. They made more free throws than St. Mary's attempted (21). Soren Nelson had a game-high 20 points for the Cobbers.

SERIES HISTORY: Concordia has won the last five games in the series. The last time that the Cardinals came away with a victory was December 9 of 2001 when they won 59-58. Concordia has also claimed 16 of the past 21 games between the two schools. Included in that string is an eight-game winning streak from 1993 until 1998…the most points scored in a single game by a single team in the series is 103. Concordia dropped a honey-bee + three on the Cardinals in 1995 when they won 103-58

THE INSIDE SCOOP

CONCORDIA (5-5 MIAC/7-8)

GETTING’ OUR GROOVE ON

Concordia has won two of their last three overall games, as well as four straight in “The Barn”. The Cobbers are coming off their most lopsided victory of the season as they battered Hamline by 17 points. The Pipers shut down league-leading scorer Keith Eckhoff, but were unable to slow down the scoring spree of Soren Nelson. Nelson had a game-high 18 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as four of the five starters for the Cobbers scored in double figures. The balanced scoring slate is a welcome sight for head coach Duane Siverson, who knows that the tough defenses in the MIAC can shut down a team that has only one scoring threat. The balanced scoring also stems from the fact that Siverson is able to use his bench a lot more. He played 10 different players against the Pipers. Also, the Cobber rotation is starting to solidify as they near the stretch run.

HOME COOKIN’

Not surprisingly, Concordia has one of the best home records in the MIAC. The Cobbers are 4-1 this season inside “The Barn” and are undefeated in league play at home. That record will be put to the test in the next week. The Cobbers will play four home games within the span of eight days. After today’s game with the Cardinals, Concordia will turn around and host St. John’s tomorrow night at 7:30pm. They will then host league nemesis Gustavus on Wednesday and St. Olaf on Saturday. The Cobbers need to come out of this stretch with at least three wins in order to make a run at hosting a playoff game come tournament time.

LONG-RANGE NET RIPPERS

Pop quiz: Which team leads NCAA Division III in 3-point field goal percentage? If you guessed Concordia then you spend way too much time browsing the NCAA stat website. However, if you guessed the Cobbers you would be correct. That’s right maroon and gold wearers, your own Running Cobbers lead the nation in 3-ball percentage. Currently, Concordia is knocking down long-range lasers at a 46.8% rate. This leads us to a couple of thoughts – 1) has

student assistant coach Josh Downey really had that much of an impact? 2) Shouldn’t Siverson change the team nickname to Shooting Cobbers instead of Running Cobbers?

THE INSIDE SCOOP

ST. MARY’S (2-8 MIAC/3-12)

MINI GROOVE

St. Mary’s has a mini groove going on. The Cardinals are riding the crest of a one-game win streak. St. Mary’s downed St. Olaf 64-54 on Wednesday in a game that was played in Winona. The Cardinals have also posted victories in two of their past four games. The stretch dates back to January 12 when the downed Hamline 83-72.

HAVEN’T WE SEEN YOU BEFORE?

If the person strolling the St. Mary’s sideline looks familiar it’s because he used to be on the St. John’s staff. First-year Cardinal coach Mike Trewick was an assistant coach for Jim Smith at St. John’s for an unbelievable nine seasons before taking over the reins from Mark Lovelace, who stepped down as the Cardinals' head coach to be an assistant at NCAA Division I Loyola (Ill.) University. Trewick was also an assistant coach for the St. John’s football team where he was known for his astute office conversations!

KLOAK AND DAGGERS

St. Mary’s junior forward Dan Kloak currently leads the team in scoring (12.7ppg) and rebounding (4.7rpg). He has upped his point production from a year ago when he averaged 6.8 points per game. He has continued his rebound pace, as he led the Cardinals in rebounding in 2003-04 as well. Kloak is one of three St. Mary’s players this season that averages over 10 points per game. Eric Lear and Jeff Tendell are the other members of the double-digit trio. Between the three players, they have led the team in scoring in 13 of the first 15 games. Tendell has posted team-high numbers in the previous two contests. He put up 14 points in both the team’s win over the Oles and their loss at Carleton

ILLINOIS BOYS

The top-notch St. Mary’s SI Department has 19 players listed on the varsity roster for men’s basketball. Of those 19 players, 10 are from “The Land of Lincoln”. Of those 10 players, two hail from Chicago and one is from Jake and Elwood’s hometown of Joliet.

Cobber Men’s Basketball Coach

Duane Siverson

Duane Siverson has been the

Running Cobber men's

basketball head coach since

1991. He has a 313-211 career

coaching record, which makes

him the all-time winningest

basketball coach in school history.

In his 13 years as the Cobber men's head coach he has already put together three of the four winningest seasons in Cobber history. His 1994-95 team went 18-7 (matching the second best win total in school history).

Last year, the 2003-04 squad made the conference playoffs for the second time in the last four years. The team finished the year with an 18-8 overall mark and a 14-6 record in conference play. Both win totals were in the top five in school history. As a team, Concordia finished the '03-'04 campaign by being ranked in the top ten in Division III in field goal percentage, free throw percentage and 3-point field goal percentage - a first in Cobber men's basketball history.

He served as an assistant coach for the Running Cobbers from 1978-1984, during which time the Cobbers captured two MIAC titles. In 1984 Siverson took over as head coach of the Cobber women's program and guided them to four MIAC titles, the 1988 NCAA Division III National Championship and seven NCAA tournament appearances. He was NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in 1988. He became head coach of the Running Cobber program in 1991.

Siverson was raised in Casselton, ND, and later moved to Spokane, WA, where he graduated from high school. He received his B.A. degree from Yankton College in 1978 and earned honors for both academic and athletic achievements.

He and his wife Bonnie, and their two sons, Tyler and Jordan, live in south Moorhead.

Hamline 57 at Concordia 74 - Game Recap

MOORHEAD-- On Monday, Concordia rode the coattails of Keith Eckhoff to stay close with league-leading St. Thomas. On Wednesday at home against Hamline, the Cobbers created a four-headed monster that helped the Cobbers prey on the Pipers, winning 74-57.

The victory closes out the first half of the MIAC season for the Cobbers. Concordia jumps into a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference with a 5-5 mark. The Cobbers crawl to within one game of the .500 plateau as they are now 7-8 overall. Hamline loses for the second straight game and slides to 3-7 in the MIAC and 5-10 overall.

Four of the five Concordia starting players scored at least 12 points and shot a combined 57.1% from the field. The Pipers tried to take Eckhoff, the league's leading scorer, from getting an open look at the basket and in the process left All-MIAC post player Soren Nelson alone to carve up the Piper defense from inside and out. Nelson finished with a game-high 18 points and collected a game-high eight rebounds.

The Pipers were also unable to stop the inside presence of Mark Dixon, who routinely drove to the basket and was able to score from the inside. He finished with 15 points.

Eckhoff had to pick his spots to score and finished with 15 points. The heightened defensive presence on Eckhoff helped him dish off a career-high six assists. Jason Miller was the final member of the killer quartet. Miller, second in the MIAC in field goal percentage, went 6-of-9 from the floor and finished with 12 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds, as the Cobbers outrebounded Hamline 36-25.

Brandon Aukes was the only Hamline player with more than nine points. Aukes ended the game with 16 points and five rebounds.

Points off of turnovers and baskets from inside the lane proved to be the undoing of the Pipers. Concordia turned 20 Piper miscues into 30 points. The Cobbers also held a 34-18 margin from points scored inside the "paint".

St. Mary’s Last Game Recap – St. Olaf 54 at St. Mary’s 64

WINONA, Minn. — This time around, it was the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team doing the running — running right past St. Olaf and right into the win column.

Just two days after suffering through a 23-0 Carleton first-half run that all but sealed the Cardinals 13th loss of the season, Wednesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game saw the Cardinals ride a 17-1 run midway through the second half that carried SMU to a 64-54 victory at the SMU Gym.

The Cardinals struggled offensively in the first half, making just 7 of 27 field goal attempts (25 percent). But an 8-for-11 effort from the free-throw line — and an 0-5 showing from the line by the Oles – kept SMU within one, 26-25, at the half.

The Oles opened a four-point, 42-38, lead with 11:25 remaining in regulation, only to have the Cardinals to do them what Carleton did to SMU on Monday — as the Cardinals scored 17 of the next 18 points, including a stretch of 12 consecutive points, to turn that four-point deficit into a 13-point, 56-43 cushion.

St. Olaf made one last charge, cutting the lead to seven, 57-50, only to have SMU knock down 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute to ice the win.

Jeff Tendall (LeClaire, Iowa) scored a game-high 14 points for SMU (2-8 MIAC, 3-13 overall), while Brensley Haywood (Joliet, Ill.) added 11 and Dan Cormier (Blaine, Minn.) and Eric Lear (Antioch, Ill.) each chipped in 10.

"Jeff did a great job for us — he's our leader and he proved that again tonight," said Trewick. "This was a nice win for the guys, but when you are playing games virtually every other night, you don't have long to savor it."
