Victorian Major Stadia Strategy

Victorian Major Stadia StrategyBulletin November 2016 0000November 2016BackgroundA key foundation of Victoria’s reputation as a sporting capital is its network of major sporting and events infrastructure. Victoria’s major sporting event infrastructure plays a significant role in the staging of many successful events. It’s a key reason why Melbourne was recognised as the Ultimate Sports City of the decade in April 2016.In dollar terms our visitor economy delivers $21 billion and generates more than 206,000 jobs annually.Major events are also a source of pride for Victorians, deliver the best of the best to our own backyard, inspire future generations to take up sport, help put the international spotlight on Victoria, and are a key factor in the ‘liveability’ of the state. With an increasing number and variety of events and crowd attendances; as well as the rise of major female competitions including W-League soccer, the Women’s Big Bash League cricket and the new AFL Women’s Football League, the Victorian Government is getting on with securing the future of the state’s major stadia and arenas to ensure no one misses out on the benefits only major events can deliver. That’s why the Victorian Government has formed a Ministerial Working Group to assess and secure the future of Victoria’s major stadia and arenas. The Ministerial Working Group will be led by Premier Daniel Andrews. Why are we undertaking a Stadia Strategy? While Victoria’s current stadia and arena network continues to be the envy of many other states and territories and indeed the world, competition in the highly competitive major sporting and events market is increasing. The Victorian Government is currently upgrading Eureka Stadium (open in 2017), Simonds Stadium (mid-2017), Junction Oval (open in late 2017), Bendigo Stadium (open in 2017) and Melbourne Park to cater for increasing demand.Recently, however other states including Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland have embarked on similar programs to improve their event infrastructure to attract and secure major sporting events. To ensure Victoria’s network of stadia and arenas continue to provide a world class experience the Victorian Government is getting on with the preparation of the Strategy to guide planning and will consult with experts and the wider Victorian public to inform a Major Stadia Strategy. What is the Major Stadia Strategy? The Major Stadia Strategy will provide a strategic framework to guide planning and investment decisions relating to major stadia and arenas. The Strategy will include an expert review and assessment of our current major stadia and arena network and will identify options for meeting the future demand across the major stadia and arena network.
