Using Developmental Theory to Design a Potty Training
Exercise
Potty training is an important developmental milestone for children and parents. Many commercial products have been produced to aid parents in accomplishing this milestone. Some even claim that children as young as one year old can be effectively toilet trained.
All responses must be word processed in a 12 point font sans serif type such as Arial, Times New Roman, or Courier. Hand written work will not be accepted! If your are using the mind map format, your ideas must be clearly communicated with the words and symbols that you choose. Please do not place narrative information sideways on paper as a mind map.

This exercise is designed to help you associate the major developmental theories to a real life situation by considering how parents would approach toilet learning from each of the grand theoretical perspectives. For each theory briefly
a. Name the developmental issue that might influence toilet training
(e.g. muscular control, cognitive maturity)
b. Give one practical tip for promoting success (e.g. for Behaviorism use colored
shampoo in the toilet bowl so that urinating causes colorful bubbles to form) – c. Cite one possible cause for failure (epigenetic system - lack of physical
maturity)
