Spencer Baptist Church

In September, Super Buddies, our after-school tutoring ministry began it’s 6th year with 1st – 4th graders from Spindale Elementary School. Mitzi Ensley is the coordinator for this ministry, which serves 12-15 children.

Also in September, Spencer led in the efforts to get supplies to the area of our nations affected by Hurricane Katrina. Our church was the drop off point for Spindale area churches and other churches from the Green River and Sandy Run Associations. Jim and Debbie Bennett drove the loaded 18 wheeler to Biloxi, Mississippi to deliver the collected materials and supplies.

In October, we paid off our church’s debt, which was incurred during the major sanctuary renovation of 2003. During the second week of October, fall revival services were held with guest evangelist, Gerald Harris, editor of the Christian Index, and guest musician, Jay Parrack, Minister of Music at Arbor Baptist Church in Fitzgerald, GA. The children of our church were “treated” to a special “Trunk or Treat” and Fall Family Festival on October 30. This was a wonderful alternative to trick or treating and our members enjoyed a special time of passing out treats from the trunks of their cars!

Our thanksgiving Lovefeast was held on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. This formal banquet is an annual event in which we fellowship, eat and worship together as we give thanks to God for the many blessings of the year. At the end of the evening, our youth assembled fruit baskets for our Homebound Members They met the following day to deliver these gift baskets to each person.

Our Senior Adults enjoyed a trip to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee at the end of November. While there, they were able to see some shows and enjoy a special time of fellowship together.

Spencer partnered once again with the Dept. Of Social Services during the month of December to provide Christmas gifts for children in our community in need of toys and clothes. Also in December, we joined forces with some of the Spindale Area churches for our 4th Annual Tree Lighting! Children of Spindale made decorations for the tree, and we gathered on the corner of N. Oak and Main St. for a service of worship.

The rest of the Advent season was full of activity around our church. We hosted the Rutherford County Chorus presentation of Handel’s “The Messiah” under the direction of Malone Thomason during the first week of December. Our children’s choirs presented “”The Next Noel” during evening services on December 11. The Adult Choir and Drama Team presented ”Lord of Light, Prince of Peace” during a special Sunday worship service. Our church family also gathered to go caroling to our Homebound Members during this month.

The Youth Winter Retreat was in Boone, on January 27-29.

Ruby Fullbright, Executive Director/Treasurer of WMU of NC was our special guest on Sunday, January 29. Ruby spoke at our Missions Breakfast about her work as a Missionary in Zambia, and then was our pulpit guest during the morning worship service.

In February, Spencer members participated in the “Souper Bowl of Caring” project to help feed the hungry/homeless in our area. As attendees left the worship service, our youth held soup pots, collecting dollars for this ministry. Also after morning worship, a soup lunch was held in the Family Life Center to raise additional money.

On Sunday, March 5, our church organist, Timothy Scruggs, presented a worship concert of organ music in our sanctuary.

Spencer hosted and participated once again in the Weekly Lenten Services sponsored by Spindale Area Churches. Area churches took turns providing the Worship Time and the Lunch Meal. These services were held each Tuesday at noon throughout Lent.

In April, our church held our Annual Easter Egg Hunt for children. Also in April, we participated with WMU of NC to provide books for Pass Road Elementary School in Gulfport, Mississippi. We collected monies to replace the books that Hurricane Katrina destroyed at that school library. Wendy Case, WMU Director, delivered our contributions at the Missions Extravaganza at Ridgecrest.

Our handbell ensemble, “The Bells of Praise’ participated in the BCSNC handbell festival in Winston Salem during the 3rd weekend of April.

In May, we held a Spring Revival with guest evangelist Ken Smith, FBC Leesburg, FL.

Other special services in May include our children’s choirs end of year worship concert, a service of special recognition for high school and college graduates, and a worship service with guest, Jeanisa Moore, former member, who shared her testimony in word and song about her faith and dependence on God, especially after an accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down.

Over the summer, our church hosted three special events at the Spindale House for our church and community. The first was a VBS Kickoff (June 4) in which we registered kids for VBS. At this event, we had inflatable games, hot dogs, sno-cones, etc. Then in celebration of Independence Day, we held an Ice Cream Social and Special Concert by the Thermal Belt Brass. Finally, on August 27th, we invited the community to join us for a Back to School Bash. Once again, we had inflatable games, free hot dogs, sno-cones, popcorn, and crafts as we tried to encourage people to enroll in our ministry opportunities. Each young person who participated in this event was given a Spencer Baptist backpack and water bottle. All three of these events at the Spindale House were a huge success and helped our community understand that Spencer Baptist Church cares about the people of Spindale and surrounding areas.!

Vacation Bible School was held the first full week of June. We enrolled 200 participants this year, with an average attendance of 180!

We held “Terrific Tuesdays” throughout the summer for children in grades 1-5. Participating children went to Linville Falls, Earth, Glaze & Fire, Swimming, Bowling, The Lazy 5 Ranch, and more.

Our youth and young adults traveled to areas affected by Hurricane Katrina in July for a week long mission trip. While there, they participated in roofing projects and other disaster relief efforts hosted by Mission Connect.

In late July, our youth attended Youth Week at Caswell

Throughout the summer, we began a renovation project in the area of our building which houses our music ministry for children and youth. This music suite was completed in time to kick off our choir programs the first week of September. This new area has been transformed from floor to ceiling into a music wonderland, thanks to the creative efforts of Jamie Wright and Jennifer Francis.

The Sunday prior to school starting, Spencer Baptist participated in an Education Prayer Day. During morning services, we called out our students and teachers and held a special prayer focus for them. Then in the afternoon, we went in small groups to each school and administration building in our county to pray for the teachers, students, and administrators who would be at that location the following week.

In August, our WMU sponsored “Christmas in August.” We received supplies for Yokefellow and for our Super Buddies Ministry.

In September, members of our church joined together to repair and renovate the house of one of our own members. Over 25 people assisted in this local mission project.
