HOMEWORK SCHEDULE #30

This week, we will delve even further into the events of the Cold War. Our study will take us over several continents as we examine major world events that contributed to the Cold War. We will investigate how war, communism, and diversity contributed to events in Korea, Israel, Cuba, Vietnam, Iran, Turkey, and Egypt.

Monday, May 03 – What are the Two Koreas? Why has Korea remained divided for more than 50 years? We will examine the Korean War.

HW #125 – Read Forces Shaping the Modern Middle East – pgs. 888-890 (Stop at Political and Economic Patterns) and The Middle East and the World – pgs. 900-901 (Just The Arab-Israeli Conflict). How has diversity caused tension in the Middle East? Why has the Arab-Israeli conflict been difficult to resolve?

Tuesday, May 04 – How have diversity and nationalism shaped the Middle East? Why has the Arab-Israeli conflict been difficult to resolve? We will investigate how the Cold War increased tensions in the Middle East.

HW #126 – Read Latin America, the United States, and the World – pgs. 940-943. Identify Fidel Castro, Cuban Missile Crisis, Salvador Allende. What changes did communism bring to life in Cuba? How have American political and economic policies affected relations with Latin America?

Wednesday, May 05 – What policies has the United States followed in Latin America? We will identify Fidel Castro, Bay of Pigs, and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

HW #127 –Read Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim – pgs. 873-877. Identify Ho Chi Minh, Pol Pott, Khmer Rouge. How did war effect Vietnam and Cambodia?

Thursday, May 06 – How did the struggle for Vietnam become part of the Cold War? We will examine the causes and results of the Vietnam War.

HW #128– Read Nation Building in the Middle East: Three Case Studies– pgs. 894-898. Identify Gamal Abdel Nasser, Ruhollah Khomeini. What kind of government did Turkey build? What steps did Egypt take toward modernization? Why did discontent spread in Iran under the shah? Describe two effects of the Iranian Revolution.

Friday, May 07 – What were the causes and results of the revolution in Iran? We will examine the Iranian revolution and also speak about developments in Turkey and Egypt.

HW #129 – Read The Soviet Union: Rise and Fall of a Superpower – pgs. 843-848. Identify Nikita Khrushchev, Mikhail Gorbachev, Boris Yeltsin, Vladimir Putin. How did the command economy and rivalry with the United States effect the Soviet Union? How did Gorbachev’s reforms contribute to the collapse of the Soviet Union?
