Worksheet Magic - Trinity Valley School

[Pages:7]Using Worksheet Magic to Make Activities and Quizzes

Open Worksheet Magic using the icon in your Teacher Apps folder. (You can click to make the opening screen go away.)

The first thing you'll want to do is type a Title for your worksheet/quiz. This title will appear at the top of the sheet when printed.

Take a moment to explore the buttons and menu items. You will see that there are buttons to make a new worksheet, open a saved worksheet, save your worksheet, print your worksheet, and preview your worksheet before printing.

Pull down the Worksheet Type menu to see the various types of activities you can create.

You will then need to type at least one "sentence" before you can save the worksheet. Worksheet Magic calls the phrases you input "sentences," but they do not have to be complete sentences. The type of phrase you input will vary depending on the type of activity you want to make. The more you experiment with Worksheet Magic, the more possibilities you'll be able to envision.

Attached to this handout are a few examples of worksheets/quizzes you can make with Worksheet Magic.

In this example, a crossword puzzle will be made using vocabulary terms and their definitions. In the Example Sentence window, type a vocabulary term and its definition, then hit the Enter key.

You will see the keyword in the left-hand window, and another space to type a new phrase. Worksheet Magic automatically chooses the longest word in the phrase to become the keyword. In this case, it chose the word latitude, which is not the vocabulary word.

To change the keyword, click on it, and its phrase will appear in the right-hand window, with the keyword underlined in red. To make your vocabulary term the keyword, highlight the word or words, then pull down the Edit menu and click on Make Keyword (or type Ctrl-M.)

Important: You must then hit the Enter key for Worksheet Magic to register the change. Notice that Arctic Circle is now the keyword.

At this point, you should save your worksheet. (Note: Worksheet Magic requires you to type at least one "sentence" before you save."

Click the Diskette icon, or pull down the File menu and click Save.

Notice that your home directory (h:) appears at the right, with any folders you may have already created. If you want to save this worksheet to a folder you've already created, find that folder in the list and double-click to open it.

The file name window appears at top left highlighted in blue as *.wsm. You may simply type over this with your file name, BUT the file name must be 8 characters or fewer with no spaces. Enter your file name and click Save.

Continue entering vocabulary terms and definitions until you have five or six of them. At that point, you may want to experiment with the different types of worksheets to see what you would like to do with this vocabulary.

Save your worksheet, then pull down the Worksheet Type menu and choose one.

To preview your worksheet, click on the Print Preview button.

In preview mode, take a look at the buttons across the top of the window. Notice the Next and Prev buttons, which will allow you to navigate among the pages of your worksheet. Also notice the buttons marked 1 and 2, which allow you to see either one or two pages at a time.

IMPORTANT: At this point, it is important to note that every time you click the Print Preview button, a different worksheet is generated. This is a nice feature, which allows you to make as many different worksheets as you like from the same set of phrases. But by the same token, if you like it, print it. Because the next time you click Print Preview, the worksheet will be different.

Worksheet Preferences

When you have entered all of your vocabulary and definitions, you'll want to look at the preferences for the different types of worksheet.

Pull down the Options menu and click on Worksheet Preferences.

The preferences for the particular type of worksheet you have chosen will appear at the front - in this case, for a crossword puzzle.

You may want to experiment with the various settings to see what you want to appear on the page. For example, you will probably want to check the Answer Key box to have an answer key printed along with the worksheet, but you may not want the keywords provided for the students. You may also change the instructions that appear on the worksheet. At any time, you may either save your settings or restore the original ones with the Restore Defaults button.

Important: If you want an answer key for your worksheet, remember to set that preference BEFORE you print the worksheet.

Once you have set the preferences for the type of worksheet you want to create, you are ready to preview and print your worksheet.

Other Worksheet Magic Tips

Deleting items: To delete a keyword or phrase from your list of phrases, just click on the keyword, then pull down the Edit menu and click Delete Sentence (or type Ctrl-D.)

Accented letters: Worksheet Magic does not tolerate accented letters in the keyword. You may use accents in the title, worksheet instructions, and in any part of the worksheet other than the keyword. If you use an accented letter in a keyword, Worksheet Magic will provide two spaces for that letter in your crossword, etc., rather than one.

Crossword Puzzle/ Font Size: If you have a lot of terms in your list, Worksheet Magic may have trouble fitting them on one crossword puzzle. You can sometimes work around this problem by reducing the font size. Just pull down the Options menu and click on Printer Font to choose a smaller font.

Importing text files: If you already have a list of terms and definitions or other questions, you may be able to import your list directly into Worksheet Magic. Just save your list as a text file. (In Microsoft Word, do Save as... and change the Save as type.. to Plain Text.) Then, in Worksheet Magic, pull down the File menu and click on Import. Check the Text file button and click OK. Then navigate to your saved text file and click OK. Remember that Worksheet Magic will automatically assign the longest word in the phrase as the keyword. Use Ctrl-M to re-assign keywords as needed.
