Morning Week 2

Spelling

Brainstorm words for the two sounds using the graphemes;

h

j g ge dge

You could create a slide show with the words that you brainstorm for each grapheme or just brainstorm your words in your book/on paper.

Spelling

Contractions

Contractions of two words are made by:

1. Writing all of the first word,

2. Joining the second word to it, leaving out one or more letters

3. Writing an apostrophe where the letters have been missed out.

Complete the contraction worksheet attached or

Print out the contraction dominoes at contractiondominos_32/

Spelling

Root words; ergon, geo, frigus, judex.

Find out what each root words means and write some examples of words that use these root words. Use the root word resource attached to help you.

Spelling

Synonyms

Choose 5 words from your spelling list. List as many synonyms as you can for each word (you can use a thesaurus). Write a sentence for each of the spelling words you have chosen using one of the synonyms.

Make sure that the synonym fits the sentence. Synonyms have similar meanings, that doesn't mean that you can always just swap a word for a synonym.

Watch the video in google classroom for examples.

Dictation

Listen to the dictation and write the sentences in your book as accurately as possible.

Or

Have a family member dictate a couple of sentences using words from the spelling list.

Please do not use docs or another word processing program to complete the dictation ? it needs to be your own work (without autocorrect!). The correct sentences will be posted on Monday (Week 3) for you to check your work.

Writing- Word Choices

Read the text titled `Felicity's Stroll in the Park'.

Goal: to improve a text by using stronger word choices. Using words that have been highlighted in the text, you are to find synonyms for these words and use them to rewrite the descriptive paragraphs. It is important that the synonyms you choose make sense in the sentence! In order to complete this task, you: Must: - Research 5 synonyms to use in your writing. - Rewrite the passage using the stronger words you have gathered in your research. Should: - Research at least 10 synonyms to use in your writing. Could: - Add more examples of adjectives, adverbs and figurative language when you rewrite the text.

Writing ? Word Choices

For this lesson, your teacher will be returning your task from Friday last week titled `paragraphing'

Goal: Use synonyms and other language techniques to improve word choices in your writing from Friday's lesson.

Remember: The synonyms that you choose must make sense for the context of your sentence.

In order to complete this task, you: Must: - Replace 5 words with new synonyms. Use a different colour text to show the changes you make.

Should: - Replace 10 words with new synonyms

Could: - Replace certain words/phrases with figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification).

Writing ? Planning a short story

There is a saying `less is more'. When writing, we want to plan for success by only writing about one main idea. It is better to write a more detailed and descriptive short story than a long story with no description.

Read the stimulus `Imagine'.

Goal: Use the template provided to plan a short story based on the stimulus. The short story will be no longer than 3 paragraphs.

When you plan your writing, text structure and paragraphing work well together. Therefore, your three paragraphs will be: an introduction, one complication, a resolution.

*Read the template provided for further instructions.

Writing - Composing a short story

Goal: Use your plan from yesterday to create a short story based on the stimulus.

When writing your short story, you should practise the skills you have learned over the past two weeks.

Success Criteria: - Use a variety of simple, compound and complex sentences. - Use strong words as you write your story. You may like to use some of the synonyms you have researched in your previous lessons - Create paragraphs by leaving a line between your introduction, complication and resolution. You should have three paragraphs with lots of detail in each. - Describe what your character is doing through the five senses (see, hear, smell, taste, touch).
