“100 Days in the Fleet” Discussion Guide10 Minutes Prior: Play Commencement Address for Univ. of Texas, 2014, ADM William McRaven. There will not be time to complete it, but the intent is to inspire participants to watch on their own. Reference the book, “Make Your Bed,” on the CNO’s Professional Reading Program, Core Attributes.I. INTRODUCTIONADMIN NOTE: Skip individual intros if more than 20 participants. Do a show of hands by command and report date. Short group discussion on why individuals joined the military.1. Individual Introductions: a. Name, Command, and Report date b. Why did you join the Marine Corps/Navy?2. Panel of 2-3 Corporals, preferably from recent Corporal’s Coursea. Introductionsb. Open up floor for questions from group (5 Minutes)c. Popular questions as discussion starters if needed:i. What is there do locally for liberty?ii. What do I need to do to pick up rank?d. Ask panel, “What do you know now that you wish you knew when you joined the Fleet?ADMIN NOTE Dismiss the panel and continue with discussion between chaplain(s) and participants.3. What has been your biggest accomplishment since you joined?4. Has the Fleet been easier or harder than you expected? Why?5. What has been your biggest challenge since you joined?6. Is there a fellow Marine or Sailor who has helped you overcome challenges?II. TOTAL FITNESSADMIN NOTE: Distribute SMART Goals handout.1. Introduce the concept of Total Fitness: Physical Fitness, Mental Fitness, Social Fitness, and Spiritual Fitness.2. Setting SMART Goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time Based.a. Show video on SMART Goals (optional)b. Recap each element3. Set a SMART goal as a Group to ensure Marines understand the concept. PFT goal is easy. Ensure specific and achievable: i.e. “Increase pull-ups from 12 to 16 in two months” (give appropriate date based on class), not “Score 280 on PFT.”4. EXERCISE 1: Give participants five minutes to write down one goal on the hand out. Challenge to participants to set personal SMART goals for each area of Total Fitness.III. RESILIENCYADMIN NOTE: Distribute timeline handout.1. Brief intro to resiliency.2. Tell story or show short video on story of resilience and discuss.OPTIONS: (Ongoing effort to find a best story to inspire participants.)a. Video of Liz Murray, Homeless to Harvard. Look at your timelines. What do you need to do to integrate your experiences on top line to make yourself better?10. What do you need to do to make your bottom line a reality? (1) What SMART goals do you need to set for shorter term items? (2) What habits can you develop that will meet your goals? (3) What habits can you develop to increase your resilience? (4) What habits do you need to remove or replace in your life?10. Look around the room. How can your peers help you push through trials? Achieve your goals?11. How do you know who to turn to for each situation? a. Do you know your natural tendency when you are stressed? b. Will you seek help or will you try to push through alone? - Marine Corps is not organized for a Marine or Sailor to go it alone!12. Wrap up discussion by reviewing the big picture of successful integration into the Fleet, resilience, and Total Fitness. ................
