Soc 2155, Introduction to Research Methods (Summer 2007) Revised 6/5/07
Exercise 1: Evaluating internet resources, APA style, finding academic research
A. Evaluating internet resources
Go to the UMD home page, click on library. On the left-hand side menu, select “search engines.” On the bottom of this page, click on “web site evaluation.” There you will find links to four Web-based sources of information on how to critically evaluate web pages. Please read through the first two, and the fourth prior to completing this exercise. Also, Babbie (the textbook) has a short discussion of the same thing in pages 448-454.
1. Select a research topic related to sociology or criminology and state your selected subject.
2. Use an internet search engine to search for web-based information on this topic. Find one “general information” web page that discusses your topic. Also find one web site that either summarizes research in this area, or is an actual research report. For each of these two web sites:
• Print the first page of the site, making sure the web addresses appear on the printout. Attach (with a staple) these pages to this exercise.
• Evaluate the web page as a potential “source” using the links from the UMD library page identified above and the Babbie book. Be specific (e.g., identify attributes of the page that suggest it is accurate (or not), or biased (or not).
B. Library Stuff
1. Where are the periodicals (journals) housed? Pick one periodical related to sociology/criminology and report the library holdings (years) of that periodical (microfilm, hard copy, electronic).
2. How do you go about requesting “interlibrary loan” for a book?
3. Find the following, and record the information you will need to create a reference page in APA format:
a. Any article in a periodical where I (your professor for this class) was one of the
authors using a “full text” data base. Print the first page of this article.
b. A book related to your topic of interest for the research proposal.
c. A newspaper article related to homelessness.
d. Create a reference page using the APA style guidelines and the three sources
that you located, plus one of your internet sources from part A.
