Types of Decision-Making
#1 Majority Rule = Putting it to a Vote
When to use it:
• Options are clear-cut and not likely to be misinterpreted.
• Group has discussed issue at length, but can’t come to an agreement.
• Group has a limited time frame to make a decision.
• Power in a group is somewhat balanced, so all members’ voices are equally heard.
#2 Consensus Rule = Talking it through until all agree on Decision
When to use it:
• If all don’t agree, the decision won’t be successful or people will try to get around it.
• Group members feel strongly about the issue and believe a vote would minimize the importance of certain issues.
• The time available to make decision is unlimited, as long as all agree with final choice.
• Power in the group is unevenly distributed and cliques in group could easily sway a vote.

Tips for Guiding Discussion When Making Group Decisions
✓ Encourage open discussion so options are laid out clearly for everyone.
✓ Offer realistic scenarios for the possible decision options.
This avoids confusion or misleading of group members.
✓ Work hard to involve all members in discussion.
✓ Avoid offering your personal opinion.
If members think you are trying to influence the decision for personal gain, they may doubt your sincerity as a leader when new issues arise.
✓ Cut off any bullying, such as teasing, making fun of or putting down members’ ideas. Make it clear that this is not acceptable so members feel comfortable expressing their opinions.
✓ Maintain balance in group power.
May need to do a confidential, written vote if members feel pressured.
✓ Motivate all members to vote so they have input into group goals and accomplishments.
