HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

The Principal reports directly to the Superintendent and performs an assortment of duties and responsibilities as the instructional leader of the school campus. The Principal is responsible for the total operation of the school, including curriculum, master schedule, supervising and evaluating all staff according to the contract, and providing overall leadership to the school site. The Principal is responsible for operating the school within appropriate budgets for administration, athletics, school supplies, and categorical programs. The Principal must have knowledge of contemporary educational practices, be responsible for the school site plan, school safety, and have knowledge of education code involving discipline of students and making recommendations for suspension and/or expulsion. He/she will also be responsible for working with the school site council in implementing categorical programs and budget expenditures at the school site, including Title I, SIP, EIA-LEP, Migrant Program, etc.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receives direct supervision from the Superintendent or designee. Exercises direct supervision over assigned certificated and classified staff. Exercises direct supervision over students as necessary.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Is the administrative head of the school and shall serve under the District Superintendent. 2. Organization and supervision of the total educational program and school facilities. 3. Participates in the selection of faculty personnel for the school in so far as practical. 4. Assists the Superintendent in the assignment of the teaching staff at his/her school. 5. Assists in the in-service training of certificated personnel and shall supervise teachers' professional

growth. 6. Provide for teachers' meetings and advise teachers with regard to instructional problems. 7. Evaluate the work of all personnel assigned to the school. Shall make recommendations for the

continued employment, reassignment, or separation from service of such personnel. 8. Assist in the development of the curriculum and in planning and adapting the courses of study to

the needs and interests of the students enrolled. 9. Coordinate, appraise, and evaluate the instructional program including school accreditation. 10. Promote supervision as a cooperative process, involving classroom teachers. 11. Responsible for the administration and supervision of aptitude tests, achievement tests, and other

testing programs approved by the board. 12. Responsible for scheduling classes, exam schedules, supervision of examinations, and room

assignments. 13. Be responsible for student registration and pupil personnel services:

a. Times and procedure for registration. b. Checking high school transcripts.

c. Evaluation of transcripts submitted by transfer students. d. Supervise the counseling of prospective students as to required and recommended courses of

study. e. Be responsible for classification of students. 14. Establish and supervise the reporting of student progress and achievement. 15. Develop and direct the school's public relations programs. 16. Provide for parental involvement in the school, including parent conferences, school site council, and parent training. 17. Develop policies for all extra-curricular activities and shall provide supervision for such activities. 18. Assists the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services in the selection and approval of all textbooks used in classes. 19. Responsible for all publications of his/her school: catalogs, information booklets, school paper, school annual, etc. 20. Supervise and direct the work of classified personnel assigned to his/her school. 21. Supervise the cleanliness, sanitation, and safety of all buildings, including a schedule for fire, earthquake, and civil defense drills. 22. Prepare a yearly budget for each program and/or department and submit an annual request in advance to the Assistant Director of Business and Support Services; and shall requisition supplies, textbooks, reference books, equipment, and all materials necessary for the operation of the school. He/she shall issue supplies and equipment as needed by personnel assigned to the school. 23. Be responsible for the custody and return of textbooks, reference books, and other nonexpendable items that he/she issues to his/her faculty and staff. 24. Be responsible for reporting to the Human Resources Department all employee absences and for verifying hours and days worked by certificated and classified employees under his/her jurisdiction. 25. Shall not authorize overtime work without District Office approval, except on an emergency basis. 26. Shall not authorize new employees to start work without first receiving approval from the Human Resources Office. 27. Shall keep the Superintendent completely and continuously informed as to the condition of the school, and the activities, and any other issues or concerns that need to be communicated to the Board of Trustees. 28. Shall perform such other duties as assigned by the District's Superintendent or designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Credential:

Valid California Teaching credential or equivalent, and Administrative

Services Credential, authorizing service at the secondary level, grades 9-

12.

2. Education:

Master's Degree, including all courses to meet credential requirements.

3. Experience:

Minimum of three (3) years successful teaching experience and three (3)

years successful experience in an administrative position. Three (3) of

years of experience must be at the middle or high school level

4. Personal Qualities: Satisfactory community relationships; ability to work well with people in

rural and city areas; broad grasp of educational planning and curriculum,

finance, legislation; willingness to develop a quality educational

program; a sound philosophy of educational leadership based on strong

character and decision-making ability supported by sound judgment.

5. Bilingualism:

Oral fluency in Spanish preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions:

This work involves sitting for long periods of time and may involve walking or standing for extended periods of time.

Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handles and works with various materials/objects.

Able to work in a wide variety of temperatures and weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors; including extreme high temperature conditions outdoors.

Physical ability to operate telephone, adding machine, calculator, computer and other office equipment on a regular and routine basis.
