YOUTH GROUP TRUTH

Start the night by talking about the expectations on our sermon times with talking.

Intro: My stupid decision at BW3’s

Need: The issue of being wise and being a fool is far more than just doing smart or stupid things. The issues of wisdom and folly are for more crucial to where wisdom is far more important and foolishness is far more dangerous than we realize.

We just came off of DNOW Weekend, and one of the main things we learned is how wise we need to be in culture. Matthew says that we need to be innocent as doves and wise as serpents (Matt 10:16). You need wisdom!

You need wisdom because you are going to face issues in the future that have never been thought through. You’re could face cloned human beings, you could face multiple sex-changed people, you could face accepted rampant homosexuality, etc. But you’re already facing way more and need way more wisdom than any teen who ever lived. Homosexuality, Online-Issues, Etc.

OT: 1:1 – Author of Proverbs. What’s the story behind Solomon and Proverbs?

Back to the garden. Satan tempted with wisdom. Eve wanted wisdom. Tree of knowledge. Sought for wisdom elsewhere than God.Separated.

- They were going about getting wisdom the wrong way, from the wrong source

o Friends, Parents, Internet (Wiki, Google), Magazines, Oprah, Dr. Phil, Self-Help Books

o Indirect: TV, Movies, Music, Advertisements, Books

o We can grow in knowledge through these means, but we must evaluate what we hear and learn through the Word of Christ

What makes Solomon credible author? Is Platt credible? The Shack?

1 Kings 3-4. Wisdom given to Solomon.

Solomon asked for wisdom to discern between good and evil!

James 1:5 – Wisdom comes from God.

TRUTH: The book of Proverbs is all about giving godly wisdom for everyday life issues, for self-control situations, and for the really tough problems in life. It is for both the inexperienced and experienced Christian.

1:2-6 – Purpose of Proverbs. To teach young men/teens wisdom.

Common: Godly tips for life. One a day. Most understandable/ practical. No theological truth in it.

Everything that we must know and all wisdom come from God.

Proverbs is:

v. 2: Practical Wisdom on Life

v. 3: Wisdom for Self-Control in Life

v. 4: Future Wisdom for open-minded and inexperienced

v. 5: Wisdom for experienced, mature Christian

v. 6: Wisdom for hard questions, problems in life.

1:7 – The Point of Proverbs. To fear the Lord by using biblical wisdom.

Knowledge vs. Wisdom.

Smartest people you know may be a fool in God’s eyes

Many people are knowledgeable without being wise.

You can only be as wise as you are knowledgeable!

All knowledge points to Christ: Math. Science. History.

Fearing the Lord:

Common: Don’t mess up! Discipline. Most don’t fear the Lord. They don’t think about judgment. Just fearing God generically.

Both the starting point and the center point.

Fear the Lord b4 salvation. Fear not pleasing Him after. Awe

LORD is Yahweh. Covenant keeping God. Not just general God

Go from who is the “LORD” here into 8, 9, and 30.

8:1-4-end – Wisdom is personified. Proverbs is talking about Jesus, the wisdom of God. Jesus is calling out to walk in a way. He is the WAY (John 14:6). Walk! Discipleship! Work in the gospel here. This is why THIS is more important than education! More important than sports!

9:10 – Not only is the fear of the Lord the beginning of knowledge, but also it is the beginning of wisdom as well.

Wisdom is the Fear of the Lord: Like “don’t have sex”. Wisdom is not just STD’s, bad marriage, and pregnancy…but it is also…fear the Lord!

Work in the gospel here. Knowledge and Wisdom.

30:1-6 – Proverbs is speaking of Jesus. Do you know His Son’s name. All knowledge and wisdom point us to Jesus Christ. Do you think of wisdom as the way to walk with Jesus? Do you separate being smart and wise in life from living for Jesus Christ? We need school! We need education! We need to be wise as serpents but innocent as doves! Work in the gospel here.

Christ: Jesus is the WISDOM OF GOD (1 Corinthians 1:24, 30). Jesus showed wisdom like Solomon did. Solomon was not the wisest man to ever live. Jesus is! People who know Christ are wiser than Solomon.

CHALLENGE: Fear the Lord Jesus Christ by responding to His call of wisdom, picking apart your life, and ask Him to give you wisdom in every way possible!

Gospel: Wisdom and the Gospel

- God’s wisdom in the design of the gospel

- Our wisdom in belief on the gospel. Sinners don’t have this.

Story: My nephew who rejects Jesus and lacks wisdom

Life: Where a lack of wisdom leads. Its not just a sin issue, but a wisdom issue.

- Trace back Divorce back to Dating,

- Dead Beat Dads back to Video Gamers,

- Adultery back to Sexual Immorality,

- Dads who can’t communicate back to Social Media,

- Church members who have no understanding of Scripture back to terrible Time Management,

- People who rarely come to church to teens who put everything else over the church, etc.

4 Things to do from Proverbs:

1. Fear the Lord by Knowing Christ, His supremacy, His glory, His gospel, His judgment.

2. Pick-apart your life. Be as picky as you can. Think and pray through everything possible and ask God how can you live more wisely for him in every part of your day, in every struggle, in every addiction, in every habit, in every relationship, in every hobby, in every thought, etc.

3. Respond to the voice of Christ calling out by confessing your foolish ways to Him, repent and change directions in your areas of foolishness, and follow Him by walking in wise areas of life.

4. Pray and ask God to give you wisdom for the future areas of your life that He has not revealed to you yet…in which you will need wisdom, and most likely it will be immediate.

Matthew 10:16-23!
