If you are responsible for professional development in a law firm, law school, corporation, or government agency, the Professional Development Institute will equip you and your organization to stay ahead in today's challenging environment.

How can PDI benefit law firm PD professionals? Today's law firm PD professionals have more varied responsibilities than ever before. The demands for increased professional development and training, combined with industry trends and business realities, have added to the challenges faced by PD professionals. Whether it's engaging your associates, implementing project management training, or developing your law firm leaders, the 2017 Professional Development Institute will help you stay on top of the latest PD trends and techniques and give you access to a network of PD professionals who are facing the same challenges.

How can PDI benefit law school career professionals? Law school career professionals must constantly look for ways to help make law students more employable in today's competitive job market. The 2017 Professional Development Institute is an opportunity for you to hear directly from law firm professionals about the skills they are looking for in first-year associates and to learn about proven programs at other law schools. Law school attendees will also find significant value in sharing best practices, new ideas, and hot topics with other law student PD professionals.

Professional Development in the Client-First Law Firm

of the Future A decade after the 2007 financial crisis, law firms face waves of unprecedented challenges. Clients have taken the upper hand with outside counsel, as law firms grapple with competition from technology companies and alternative legal services providers while coping with shrinking retainers and internal succession crises. Jordan Furlong, legal market analyst and industry consultant, contends that law firms must now transform themselves from short-term partner-profit "hotels for lawyers" into productive, client-focused, legal solutions enterprises. In the coming years, law firms will generate revenue from a diverse range of sources ? including technology-driven products, strategic advisory services, and the contributions of skilled "non-lawyers" ? rather than from the billable efforts of lawyers alone.

6

Among the many implications of these changes will be a new set of challenges and opportunities around professional development in law firms and law schools. What new skills will be required of law students and new lawyers joining law firms in 2020 and beyond? What are the professional development implications of multi-disciplinary law firms with growing ranks of "non-lawyers"? Furlong, author of the recently published Law Is a Buyer's Market and publisher of the influential Law21 website, will share his insights about what the future of large law firms in North America means for PD professionals.

CONCURRENT SESSIONS

11:00 AM?12:15 PM

Future-Proofing Your Career: How I Learned to Utilize My PD Network Every day we PD professionals go to work thinking about the next career and development steps for our associates and partners. How often do we think about our own development and career paths? Do we have networks to rely upon and resources to use when needed? Do we know how to make ourselves indispensable without working ourselves to death? How can we reinvent ourselves to keep up with the ever-changing legal environment? PD professionals must make time to attend to their own career paths to ensure they are well positioned for the future of law firm and law school PD, whatever that will be! This session will help you to focus on your path by providing a variety of career tips from both the firm and school arena. You will leave with at least one concrete action item, along with a follow-up plan with built-in accountability from the panel and a colleague to support your future-proofing plans.

Helping Law Students and New Lawyers Find Their "X Factor"

It is often easier to counsel students who perform well academically, participate in law review, compete on the mock trial competition team, or receive multiple academic awards. Their value to employers is easy to identify. But that is a relatively small portion of the students (and new lawyers) whom we are tasked with helping. As law career counselors and PD professionals, we must also help law students and recent graduates who were not high performers during law school. How do we help them convey their worth to employers and other associates when they are not sure of their own value?

Rupa Bhandari, Assistant Dean and Adjunct Professor, Santa Clara University School of Law

Corey Farris, Associate Dean, Golden Gate University School of Law

The F Word: Feedback Without All the Static

Feedback is the engine that drives professional development, yet we all know that most feedback ? whether complimentary or constructive ? remains uncommunicated. In this session, our panel

will diagnose the barriers to obtaining candid and timely feedback, explore the three different forms of feedback, and test-drive practical tools and strategies that our lawyers and law students can use to form effective feedback habits.

Jody Rosen Knower, Chief Training & Professional Development Officer, Sidley Austin LLP

The Missing Ingredient: How to Use Liminal Thinking to Enhance Lawyer Learning Why offer powerful, unique training programs if the new knowledge and skills don't stick? Lawyers and law students are smart and accomplished, but these attributes can actually make it harder for them to consider fresh perspectives and accept new ways of doing things. Luckily, the ability to learn is learnable, and liminal thinking, a kind of mindfulness, is the key. Though often associated with stress relief and focus, mindfulness cultivates a mental flexibility that makes new information and skills easier to learn and "stickier." This session draws on cutting-edge research to show how PD professionals can help lawyers learn more effectively.

Jon Krop, Founder, Mindfulness for Lawyers

Sheri Zachary, Director of Career Development and Inclusion, Saul Ewing LLP

Training for Change and Innovation How do we provide training that supports continuous change and innovation? In the current competitive environment, law firms are responding to the need to deliver commoditized corporate and other legal services in a more automated, efficient, and cost-predictable way. Frequent changes to the technology and software to obtain this efficiency and predictability require the flexibility to adopt new roles and develop new skills while minimizing the ramp-up time and the discomfort that inevitably accompany any significant change. Join our panel as they step you through a case study on how they implemented and continue to drive the changes demanded in today's legal environment.

Visualize This! Using Visuals to Supercharge the Impact of Your Learning Why are so many of our training and learning opportunities "talking head" or "voice-over PowerPoint text" when study after study shows that visual memory is far superior to auditory? Hear something, and three days later you will remember 10% of it. Add visuals and you will remember 65%. Our senses are designed to work together, so when these components are combined in a learning environment, the brain pays more attention and problem-solving capabilities are greatly increased. This session will explore how we can leverage the power of visuals to supercharge the impact of our learning and development initiatives.

Confronting a Crisis: Strategies to Retain AfricanAmerican Male Lawyers Let's be honest, when it comes to retaining African-American male lawyers in the large law firm setting, we are in a crisis. However, until there is realistic and transparent dialogue about the seriousness and implications of this dilemma, we will continue to see nothing more than a merry-go-round of lateral lawyers hopping from one firm to another, stagnating their careers, and further reducing their chances of making partner. This session will challenge us to rethink the way we deal with the current efforts to develop, retain, and promote African-American male lawyers.

Cedric Ashley, Managing Director, LifeCycleLegal LLC

innov8 & collabor8: Engaging Your Lawyers in Design Thinking and Action Learning Want to bring innovative thinking to your lawyers and new solutions to your firm? What about using training to build cross-practice collaboration? Maybe action learning and design thinking concepts are for you. "Design thinking" is a human-centered approach to innovation that integrates the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success. Attend this session to learn the basics of action learning and design thinking, and to experience a slice of the process. Then learn about how one firm brought some of these concepts to train lawyers who worked in small teams to collaborate and create new solutions to firm challenges.

Leave Them Wanting More: Public Speaking Best Practices

With today's increased use of electronic communication, public speaking seems to be taking a back seat to various other forms of communication. Yet public speaking is still a skill that we use every day, whether in team meetings, in videoconference meetings, or in presentations to our colleagues. When was the last time that you evaluated your effectiveness in public speaking? Are you creating experiences that your listeners want more of? How well are you engaging your audiences and making them feel that they have gained value from interacting with you? Come to this session to refresh your skills so you can answer in the positive to these questions and become a proficient public speaker.

New Approaches to Lawyer Reviews and Performance Feedback

Law firm leaders have long felt that the tremendous efforts put into the formal year-end evaluation process by both lawyers and administrative staff have not translated into the kind of feedback that associates want and need. Feedback collected through traditional review processes is often too vague, too light, and too late. Consulting firms and other major corporations have led the way towards a new approach by eliminating the annual review process entirely and collecting feedback in new and innovative ways. Now a handful of law firms are beginning to follow suit. In this session, we will hear from one team about their new approach to evaluations and the lessons they've learned along the way.

The ROI of Outplacement Counseling: How and What Do Law Firms Benefit?

Outplacement assists exiting lawyers with their job search ? but what does it do for the law firm? This session will discuss the benefits of outplacement for the bottom line of law firms, specifically how it acts as a catalyst to maintain law firm ties with alumni lawyers, encourage relationship-building between law firms and existing clients, and provide mentoring opportunities for senior/ retiring partners. This session features experienced outplacement counselors who will provide examples of job search counseling techniques and tactics which benefit not just the exiting lawyer, but the law firm as well. The panel will also offer ideas for PD professionals to assist exiting lawyers in their job search with an eye to benefiting the firm and building positive relationships.

Getting the Most Out of Your New Associates: Client, Law Firm, and Consultant Perspectives This session offers three perspectives ? client, firm, and consultant ? on how to design highly effective associate orientation and integration programs that will allow associates to make meaningful contributions from day one. The panel will explore the client perspective on areas most ripe for improvement, the consultant perspective on prioritizing key skills at the outset of a lawyer's career, and the firm perspective on incorporating these objectives in on-boarding and integration, including selling this approach to senior management. The session will also address the foundational question: how to get millennials to buy into the path to success within the notoriously hierarchical firm model. Understanding these three important perspectives will help you develop junior associates who can confidently deliver high-quality work with every client penny.

Victoria Coyle, Founder, Leading Legal Practice

Lauren Tierney, Senior Manager of Professional Development, Sullivan & Cromwell LLP

Harnessing Your Inner Critic for Good

The inner critic can be full of criticism, frustration, or disapproval. It can hinder our ability to think creatively, take risks, and approach difficult situations with confidence and ease. This session will explore the role of one's inner critic through experiential exercises. We will work through personifying the inner critic and identifying negative or self-defeating thought patterns and explore the research behind working with negative thought patterns, such as neuroscience, cognitive behavior, mindfulness, and positive psychology. This session will give you practical tools to use with your lawyers or law students so they can channel their inner critic for good and use it as a source of strength.

Inclusion Nudges: Structural Changes That Help Lawyers and Legal Professionals Interrupt Unconscious Bias

Unconscious bias is one of the biggest challenges to advancing diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. While training on unconscious bias is an essential first step, legal organizations seeking to get ahead of the curve are embedding bias-interrupters into their processes and procedures. Attend this session to learn how to nudge any process in your organization to make it more bias-proof. You will also learn how law firms and legal departments are creating inclusion nudges, practice nudging a process with your peers, and receive lists of inclusion nudges that could be implemented in your recruiting, hiring, assessment, and promotion processes.
