MANTRA MEDITATION

[Pages:1]MANTRA MEDITATION

The mind has a tendency to babble. Buddhists call this the `monkey mind'. This internal, eternal, endless chatter can drive you to distraction. However, you can often use words to overcome the monkey mind. The principle is simple. You just say a single word or combination of words endlessly throughout the meditation. This somehow forces us to focus on something simple so that the endless mind chatter fades into the background. Just keep saying the chosen word or words either aloud, or if in a group silently, over and over and over again. The words may have meaning or not as the case may be. The trick in fading the monkey mind is that you place something else which focuses the mind at the foreground and your mind falls into line.

You can say a mantra at any time and while doing any activity. Mantra meditation can lead to states of tranquility and bliss and are often used in many spiritual traditions in a devotional sense. Mantras can, however, also be rather mindless unless combined with visualizations or concepts. As with all meditation techniques sample, practice and accept if suitable or reject if unsuitable for you.

Tune in to sounds around you for a moment or two to bring you into the present moment

Take a couple of deep breaths and sigh as you breathe out Focus on the breath and just watch the breath for a few minutes till your mind

begins to settle Select your mantra (`Peace-of-Mind' or `Grace-under-pressure' are good ones

with which to start.) Start repeating it silently. Synchronise it with your natural breathing or heartbeat. (For example `Peace-of-

Mind' on the in-breath, `Peace-of-Mind' on the out-breath) Feel your vocal chords moving with the mantra sounds. Enjoy the rhythm and

texture or resonance of the sound. Flow with it. Be present from start to finish. When the mind drifts off, notice that you have

done so and bring your mind back to the breath and mantra sound. Periodically check through the body to ensure you are relaxing fully. `Peace-of-

Mind-Peace-of-Mind-Peace-of-Mind....' You can perform this meditation for just five minutes or 30 minutes however

long you have or need to instantly relax the body and calm the mind for whatever is next for you in your busy day.
