WHAP Period 6 Map Instructions

MAP 1: EUROPE BEFORE WWI (1914) 1. Create a map key. Identify one color for the Triple Alliance and one color for the Triple Entente. 2. Using the color you identified for the Triple Alliance, shade Triple Alliance member countries that color, and label the country names. 3. Using the color you identified for the Triple Entente, shade Triple Entente member countries that color, and label the country names.

MAP 2: THE WORLD DURING WWI (1914-1918) 1. Create a map key. Identify one color for the Central Powers and one color for the Allied Powers. 2. Using the color you identified for the Central Powers, shade the countries of the Central Powers. Include any colonies of the Central Powers. 3. Using the color you identified for the Allied Powers, shade the countries of the Allied Powers. Include any colonies of the Allied Powers. 4. Use dark red lines to identify the Western Front and Eastern Front during WWI.

MAP 3: EUROPE AND THE MIDDLE EAST AFTER WWI (1919) 1. Outline bodies of water with blue (to clearly distinguish land from water). 2. Label the following nations: Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland, Great Britain, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Soviet Union, Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, and Transjordan. (You may need to use numbers to identify the small countries and write their names off to the side of the map) 3. Use one color to indicate new nations created after WWI. Identify this in your key. Using that color, shade any new nation created after WWI.

MAP 4: EUROPEAN AGGRESSORS ON THE MOVE (1935-1941) 1. Outline bodies of water with blue (to clearly distinguish land from water). 2. Create a map key. One color will represent Axis Powers in Europe, and a lighter version of that color (for instance, light red if you used normal red to represent the Axis Powers) will represent the places Axis Powers expanded to. 3. Label the Axis Powers in Europe (Germany and Italy) and shade them using the color you indicated in your key. 4. Next, label the countries that Axis Powers invaded in Europe from 1935-1941. If they succeeded in conquering them, then shade those countries using the color indicated in your key. If they did not succeed in taking them over, then just draw an arrow indicating they attempted to conquer those places.

MAP 5: JAPANESE EXPANSION IN THE PACIFIC (1930-1941) 1. Create a map key. One color will represent Japan, and another color will represent places that Japan expanded into and took over between 1930-1941. 2. Label Japan and shade it using the color indicated in your key. 3. Next, draw a boundary line around Japan's empire at its greatest extent. 4. Shade any places Japan took over using the color indicated in your key. Label the following: Korea, Manchuria, China, Thailand, Burma, French Indochina, Malaysia, Dutch East Indies, Philippines

MAP 6: THE WORLD DURING WWII (1939-1945) 1. Create a map key. One color will represent Axis Powers, and another will represent the Allies. 2. Using the colors indicated in your key, shade all Axis countries, and shade all Allied countries. Include colonies. 3. Label "European Theater" and "Pacific Theater" on your map.

MAP 7: THE CREATION OF ISRAEL (1948) 1. Label the following: Mediterranean Sea, Sinai Peninsula (Egypt), Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon, Golan Heights, The West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. 2. Draw in and label the following: Dead Sea, Sea of Galilee, Jordan River

MAP 8: GLOBAL COMMUNISM (1917-1991) 1. Create a map key. Use the color red to indicate communist nations. 2. Using red, shade in all of the nations that had become communist between 1917-1991 (to show the fullest extent of the spread of communism). Include USSR satellite countries. 3. Draw and label the "iron curtain."

MAP 9: NATO AND THE WARSAW PACT 1. Create a map key. Use the color red to indicate Warsaw Pact nations, and use the color blue to indicate NATO countries. 2. On the map, shade NATO member countries. 3. On the map, shade Warsaw Pact member countries. 4. Draw and label the "iron curtain."

MAP 10: THE FALL OF THE USSR (1991) 1. Outline bodies of water in blue. Shade in the following bodies of water entirely in blue: Caspian Sea, Black Sea, Baltic Sea. 2. Use a red marker (or a solid red colored pencil) to draw a thick red line around the fullest extent of the Soviet Union. 3. Next, label all of the new nations that were created after the breakup of the USSR in 1991. You may need to use numbers to identify the smallest nations and then identify them in the margin. Be sure to include the following: Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania.
