EUROPE: THE 1st WORLD WAR MAP INSTRUCTIONS - MAP DUE NO LATER THAN MON., APRIL 14, 2014

(TEXTBOOK PAGES 680, 687, 696 & 1006, AND ANY OTHER SOURCES THAT ARE HELPFUL); (ALL LABELING ON MAP & KEY TO BE COMPLETED IN BLACK OR BLUE INK): YOUR KEY MUST BE HAND-PRODUCED…NO CUTTING / NO PASTING, ETC.

A. Label the following by name directly on the map and then completely shade all water blue; do not

include names in key!

1. Atlantic Ocean 5. Bosporus Strait 9. Mediterranean Sea

2. Aegean Sea 6. Dardanelles Strait 10. North Sea

3. Baltic Sea 7. Dnieper R. (draw on map with dark blue line & label) 11. Red Sea

4. Black Sea 8. English Channel 12. Strait of Gibraltar

B. Use the capital letter code only to label the following countries on the map and then, in the

key, write each letter = name:

A=Albania I=Greece Q=Romania (Rumania)

B=Austria-Hungary J=Italy R=Russia

C=Belgium K=Luxembourg S=Serbia

D=Bulgaria L=Montenegro T=Spain

E=Denmark M=Netherlands U=Sweden

F=France N=Norway V=Switzerland

G=Germany O=Ottoman Empire

H=Great Britain P=Portugal

C. Use the number code only to label the following points on the map and then, in the key, write each number = name:

D. Use the small case letter code & this symbol, [pic] in bright red, to identify the following battle sites on the map and then, in the key, write each small case letter = name:

a. Gallipoli e. Tannenberg

b. Jutland f. Caporetto

c. Verdun g. Jerusalem

d. Ypres

E. Remaining instructions – follow exactly – (in the key only, show each color (#s1-3) in a box = what each box represents; #s4, 5 & 6, place directly on the map):

1. Shade with purple those nations which fought on the side of the Central Powers.

2. Shade with green those nations which fought on the side of the Allied Powers (Allies).

3. Shade with yellow the neutral countries.

4. With a heavy black line, outline the Balkan Peninsula.

5. Write 3A in the countries that represent the Triple Alliance.

6. Write 3E in the countries that represent the Triple Entente.

7. Serbia was a friend of Russia; draw a heavy Red line between Serbia and Russia. Include in key.

8. In the city of Sarajevo, draw an assassination symbol [pic]. In key, include: [pic] = assassination.

9. Austria-Hungary’s declaration of war on Serbia: Near Vienna, draw a declaration of war symbol [pic].

In key, include [pic] = declaration of war.

10. Russia mobilized its army to protect Serbia: In Russia draw troops as stick figures. In key, include your

symbol for your stick figures = mobilization.

11. To protect Austria-Hungary from Russia, Germany declared war on Russia. To protect Russia from

Germany, France declared war on Germany. Near Paris and Berlin, draw declaration of war symbols.

12. Italy said Austria-Hungary’s war with Serbia was not for defensive purposes and so Italy refused to

help the Triple Alliance: In Italy, place an X on top of the 3A.

13. The attack on neutral Belgium convinced Britain to support its allies: Near London, draw a declaration

of war symbol.

14. Russians were defeated at Tannenberg and never fully recovered from their defeat by the Germans:

Draw broken arrows from Moscow to Tannenberg. In key, include = Tannenberg Defeat

15. Draw a heavy Purple boundary line indicating the Central Powers’ farthest advance into Russia by

1918. Include in key.

16. Shade all other territories not specifically mentioned in the instructions above in light brown. In key,

color box brown = other territories not mentioned.
