Introduction:

Project a world map onto the board and ask students to find the United States. Organize the students into groups of 4-5. Give each group a

United States puzzle to work cooperatively. Students will put the puzzle together and identify West Virginia on the puzzle. Puzzles for this

activity may be found at The Dollar Tree. As students go back to their seats give them each a blank United States

map  and a crayon. Students will then color West Virginia on the

map. Use the results of this activity to inform instruction throughout the module

Academic Vocabulary:

Research has shown that the least effective strategy for teaching vocabulary is having students look up words and write the definitions.  For quality, research-based strategies for teaching content vocabulary, use the following link .

Manage the Process:

Stage 1:

Divide students into 4 groups. Each group will be given a vocabulary word from the academic vocabulary listed above. Using the Frayer Model,

students will work within their groups to fill in the model for their vocabulary word. Use the following link

for Frayer Model directions. After work groups have finished they will share their graphic with classmates discussing the word. Students may

add items to the graphic as they discuss with their classmates.

Stage 2:

Introduce and read the story Me on the Map! by Joann Sweeney. Discuss with the students their special place on the map. Students will then

create a Me on the Map book of their own using the Me on the Map (see below)  document. Students may draw their own maps or print maps off the

computer to use in their book.

Stage 3:

Review with students what a river is. On chart paper make a list of rivers that they have visited in our

state.  Project  onto the board showing students the many rivers in West Virginia.

Allow students to point out rivers they have visited on the projection. They may include the activities that they participated in on each

river they have visited. Point out the four major rivers in West Virginia: Kanawha, Potomac, Monongahela, and Ohio. Use a blank West Virginia

map to write locations of rivers on the map.

Stage 4: Introduce the book M is for Mountain State by Mary-Ann McCabe Riehle to the class. Ask students to make predictions about the story.

Read the story to the students and discuss the story as you are reading. After reading the story students will use the M is Mountain

State document (see below) to identify the relative location of West Virginia, identify the Allegheny Mountains, identify the capital of West

Virginia, identify their hometown, and a place they would like to visit in West Virginia. Students may use online maps, maps of West Virginia,

and M is for Mountain State to find the listed places.

Stage 5:

The teacher will review the Salt Dough and Map Presentation Rubric (see below) with students. Students will work with a partner to draw the

outline of West Virginia onto a piece of card board using the class projector.  Partners will use the following

link   to find 5 rivers in West Virginia and 1 lake. Students will print the map (see

below) to use when making a salt dough map that will include the 5 rivers, 1 lake and the Allegheny Mountains. Partner groups will mix 1 cup

of salt and 1 cup of flower in a bowl and add 1 cup of water. Knead until smooth and place on map outline. Students will then use maps to

identify and show the rivers, lake, and mountains of the salt dough map. Once the map has dried students may use a sharpie to identify the

river names, the lake, the mountains, and the states that border West Virginia. Students will present information to the class.

Student Reflection:

Why do I need to know the location of my state, rivers and lakes in my state, and the mountains?

Teacher Reflection:

After this module, students should have an understanding of West Virginia and its location in the world. Students should be able to identify important geographic features in the state. What changes would strengthen the module to help my students the next time I teach this module?
