Course Description

The band programs at Greeley West High School are designed to continue the musical development that the student began in middle school. The student improves his/her skills and musicianship through individual and group instruction and performance.

Course Outcomes

The student will demonstrate competency in music reading and performance technique on his/her chosen instrument.

The student will demonstrate knowledge of basic standard musical terminology.

The student will demonstrate knowledge of basic music theory.

The student will demonstrate appropriate performance standards.

The student will demonstrate competency in marching basics and drill chart reading.

Required Materials

Instrument – clean and in good working order

Accessories – reeds (at least four at all times!) that should be used on alternate days, reed holder, oil, slide grease, lyres, and flip folders. Trumpet players need a (metal) straight mute.

Percussionists – need at least one pair of concert snare (preferably SD-1 Generals) sticks, 1 pair of keyboard mallets and 1 pair of timpani mallets. One pair of marching sticks will be issued to each student on the drum line. If broken, each student will be responsible for replacing them. Each year the percussion student should acquire additional sticks and mallets, so that by their senior year they will have numerous sizes and styles of sticks and mallets in order to perform the more difficult literature. A good stick/mallet bag will help keep this investment clean and organized.

Textbook – Marching Band: N/A, Wind Ensemble/Symphonic Band - Foundations for Superior Performance, Pep Band: N/A

Marching Band Uniforms will be issued clean; it is the student’s responsibility to keep it clean. Black marching shoes can be purchased through your director.

Evaluation

Daily Participation = 10% of total grade per semester

Due to the fact that band is heavily reliant on the participation of each student; daily points for attendance and participation are given for each class. If a student misses a rehearsal for any reason excused or unexcused, it is the responsibility of the student to contact Mr. Arthur for a make-up assignment where credit may be given accordingly. Simply showing up to rehearsal does not guarantee that a student will receive full credit for that rehearsal. Participation, positive attitude, and preparation are mandatory to receive a successful grade in this class. You have two (2) days after an absence to receive and complete a make-up assignment; otherwise the grade for that day will remain a zero.

Extra Rehearsal Attendance – 20% of total grade per semester

Band is considered a co-curricular activity; because of this, there are outside rehearsals. Attendance at these rehearsals is required for the “Extra Rehearsal Attendance” portion of the grade. Work is not an excuse to miss the extra rehearsals.

Performances = 35% of total grade per semester

Band concert participation is crucial to the development of every band program and is a tool to assess the learning of each student. In addition, performance is a fun and educational way to demonstrate what takes place in the band program. Concert participation is mandatory for each student in the band program. If a student has a severe conflict or emergency and is unable to participate in the concert, the student must speak to Mr. Arthur personally about the situation at least immediately and another pathway to make up full concert credit will be discussed and implemented between the student and director. If a student decides not to attend a concert for any reason (other than the before mentioned excuse) the student will not be able to make-up the concert credit and will receive a 0% for that concert.

Playing/Written Assessments = 25% of total grade per semester

Students will be required to take playing tests and written assessments throughout the semester. There will not be any substitutions for missing these tests. If a student misses a playing and or a written test, they must make-up the test within two (2) days (whether excused or unexcused). If the absence is excused the student may make up the test for full credit; if the absence is unexcused the student may make up the test for half credit.

Band Final = 10% of total grade per semester

The band final is at the discretion of the director and will be a culmination of the semester’s work in the band program. Examples of the final assessment per semester could include: a written music theory exam, a sight reading exam, historical context of a piece reflected in essay, etc.

Cell phones, headphones, may NOT be used while in class. These will be confiscated if being used during class. Consequences for the use of prohibited electronic items (phone, iPod, PSP, etc.) will be as follows;

Second Offense – Confiscated by teacher and given to their assigned Principal. Student may pick up the device from the Principal at the end of the school day.
