He married Bethiah Harris, June 23, 1778 in Wyoming, Luzerne, Pennsylvania.

Notes for John11 Jenkins: [Broderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #3972, Date of Import, August 14, 1997] From the Harris Genealogy. A History of James Harris of New London, Connecticut, page 43 is the following: Bethia Harris, Daughter of Jonathon, Born in Salem, Connecticut, 14 September 1752, m. 28 June 1778, Colonel John Jenkins, b. 27 Nov. (O.S.), or 8 December (N.S.), 1751, son of John Jenkins of Wyoming, Pennsylvania. They were married in Jenkins Fort, Wyoming, by Rev. Jas. Benedict, ten days before the memorable Indian massacre at Wyoming and twenty days after Colonel Jenkins, then a Lieutenant in the Colonia service of the Revolutionary war, had returned from a long, bitter, and perilous captivity of six months among the Indians, from whom he had effected his escape. His father, John Jenkins, Sen., born in Kingston, Rhode Island, 6 February 1728, came to Colchester, Connecticut in 1750, taught school there, and married Lydia, daughter of Stephen Gardner, a hotel keeper on the east side of Gardner’s Lake and had the following children, viz. John, who married Bethia Harris as before state; Stephen, born 22 February 1753, died 20 September, 1808; Benjamin, born 18 July 1754, died March 1787; Amy, born 12 January 1757, died 24 March 1834; Thomas, born 19 January 1761, died 22 April 1812; William, born 30 October 1764, died 1 November 1846; and Wilkes, born 18 July 1767, died 1 April 1838. He removed from Colchester to Wyoming with the first company of Connecticut Settlers there in 1769 and was one of the earliest participants and chief agent in the Connecticut movement for settling that valley. Among the many sad stories of the trials and perils of the pioneer settlers of our American colonies, the story of the early settlement of this lovely valley of Wyoming is the most mournful and memorable of all, and has a peculiar interest to our Harris family. These Connecticut settlers claimed title there under the express terms of the charter of King Charles II to Connecticut in 1662, which covered all this western territory; but they were in the very infancy of their settlement, imperiled by prowling, armed, and organized bands of Pennamites, as they were called, who claimed that the charter subsequ3ently granted to William Penn, in 1681, embraced the same territory. These marauding bands, with their Indian allies, whose natural hostility to the settlers they cold easily incite, by their joint inroads, kept the settlers and the very existence of the settlement in constant alarm and peril for several years, murdering, or taking into captivity, men, women and children without discrimination; burning their rude dwellings, destroying their cattle and their crops and more than once compelling the whole band of settlers to flee for their lives; many of them pursuing their weary way on foot with their little ones, through the wilderness, back to their friends in Connecticut. In the war of the Revolution, which came even before their other perils had ceased, they were made the special victims of the British, Tory, and Indian barbarities, and the every memorable “Massacre of Wyoming”, which had been the pathetic burden of song and story over both continents, was the fitting and crowning event of their suffering. In all these events and perils John Jenkins, sen., was the recognized champion and head; the founder, leader, and defender of the settlement. He was appointed by Connecticut as its first General Agent for the settlement of Wyoming; was a surveyor and conveyancer by profession, and made its first surveys; drafted most of all of its early public document; was its first magistrate and justice of the peace, and its first Presiding or Chief Judge of Court; and was five times sent as its representative to the Colonial Assembly of Connecticut from Wyoming, then called Westmoreland, and made part of Litchfield County, Connecticut; a circumstance which may seem a little strange to this generation. He died in Wyoming in November 1784, just after the close of the Revolutionary War, aged 56, leaving his country and his beloved valley in peace. John Jenkins, Jun., served as Lieutenant in the army of the revolution until the close of the war and was afterwards a Major and Colonel of militia. He was by profession a lawyer, surveyor, and conveyancer; carried on large farming operations, iron smelting, etc.; was sheriff of Luzerne County; County Commissioner; member of Assembly; held many local offices; for many years town clerk, supervisor, assessor, etc; was Surveyor General of the Connecticut Susquehanna Company and for some time the General Agent. He settled in Exeter Township on the site of the battleground where stood old Wintermoot fort, where he died 19 March 1827, age 75. His widow, Bethia, a woman of rare mental and moral endowments and culture, who had shared conspicuously in all the perils and hardships of the valley, and whose sufferings amid those wild scenes of blood and carnage wee the nursery tales in my young days, of every Harris household in the old hive of the family in New London County, died 12 August 1842, age 90.

Notes for John Welch Sharps: [Broderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #3972, Date of Import: August 14, 1997] In 1848 bought 55 acres of land in Exeter, Pennsylvania and later more land in Exeter. On May 6, 1854, they bought the Christian Miller farm at Wyoming for $10,000. This farm consisted of 67 acres of land named “Hibernia” being land between Sixth Street and Fifth Street reaching from Susquehanna Avenue to Wyoming Avenue. In the purchase was included “the ferry” which was operated from the foot of Sixth Street across the Susquehanna River by the Sharpe boys until the building of the Wyoming Bridge. Messrs. Atherton, Jenkins, Shoemaker and Sharps laid the farm out in building lots, thus providing the first large addition to Wyoming, Pennsylvania. In the division of the property, John Sharps, Jr., retained the Christian Miller house and the ferry. John, Jr., and Catharine Bethiah (Breese) Sharps made their home, throughout the remainder of their lives, on this property. The ferry was operated continuously under the ownership of John Sharps, Jr., until his death and was operated by his son, James Sharps, until the new bridge at Wyoming was built a few years ago.
