October is the Month of the Rosary

We celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on Oct. 7

The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, formerly known as Our Lady of Victory and Feast of the Holy Rosary, is a feast day of the Roman Catholic Church, celebrated on October 7, the anniversary of the decisive victory of the combined fleet of the Holy League of 1571 over the Ottoman navy at the Battle of Lepanto.

In 1571, Pope Pius V organized a coalition of forces from Spain and smaller Christian kingdoms, republics and military orders, to rescue Christian outposts in Cyprus, particularly the Venetian outpost at Famagusta which, however, surrendered after a long siege on August 1 before the Christian forces set sail.

On October 7, 1571, the Holy League, a coalition of southern European Catholic maritime states, sailed from Messina, Sicily, and met a powerful Ottoman fleet in the Battle of Lepanto. Knowing that the Christian forces were at a distinct material disadvantage, the Holy Pontiff, Pope Pius V, called for all of Europe to pray the Rosary for victory, and led a rosary procession in Rome.

After about five hours of fighting on the northern edge of the Gulf of Corinth, off western Greece, the combined navies of the Papal

States, Venice and Spain managed to stop the Ottoman navy, slowing the Ottoman advance to the west and denying them access to the Atlantic Ocean and the Americas.

Some accounts say that Pope Pius V was granted a miraculous vision of the Holy League's stunning victory. Without a doubt, the Pope

understood the significance of the day's events, when he was eventually informed that all but 13 of the nearly 300 Turkish ships had been captured or sunk. Pius V instituted "Our Lady of Victory" as an annual feast to commemorate the victory at Lepanto, which he attributed to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Throughout the ages, Our Blessed Mother has encouraged people to pray, pray, pray the Rosary daily while meditating on the mysteries.

Our Lady gave 15 promises to St. Dominic and Blessed Alan de la Roche to those who pray the Rosary daily and maintain a deep devotion to the Rosary.

Sister Lucia dos Santos, (one of the Fatima children) had this to say about the Rosary:

"The Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Rosary to such an extent that there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, whether temporal or above all spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families...that cannot be solved by the Rosary. There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary."

Radio Maria partners with University of St. Thomas

Bothers and Sisters, I'm very excited to

share with all of you that the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, and Radio Maria USA have forged a partnership to provide faculty expert guests for my show "The Gathering Place."

In addition, Radio Maria is looking forward to having radio presenters from UST who would have their own radio shows in English to be broadcast from our Radio Maria studios in Houston and the University itself.

These guests and presenters are not only world renowned theologians and scholars, but

also teaching professors who will bring excitement and engaging content to Radio Maria.

Student Internships Radio Maria has also

opened up internship opportunities for students at the University of St. Thomas. I am currently working with the Communication Department and the Career Services Department to offer these unpaid internships for class credit.

Students will learn broadcast and production skills, and even serve as voice talent while serving the Church. I will be asking for students and

Deacon Al Vacek

others to assist us at Radio Maria in order to research, create, prepare, assist and promote radio programming.

In effect, we are reaching out to University of St. Thomas professors to re-vitalize and re-energize our current program-

ming and to its students who want to gain valuable radio experience.

But, it does not stop there...

Our Blessed Mother calls us, at Radio Maria, to evangelize and spread the Good News of the Gospel, as well as to save souls. Every day Radio Maria broadcasts 24/7 and its programs go on the air to reach the hearts of its listeners. We spread our Lady's mission for the New Evangelization. This mission is fulfilled through preaching and teaching the Catholic faith by means of radio and Internet programming.

Deacon Al's message Continued from page 3

In our current stormy times and culture when Our Holy Mother the Church is losing young people in vast numbers, Radio Maria can be a beacon of light, a life preserver for them!

We at Radio Maria believe that radio and the Internet are simple and effective means for propagating the Gospel. Since our programming includes liturgy, catechesis, spirituality and spiritual assistance with everyday issues, human develop-

ment, news and information, music and culture, Radio Maria is the perfect beacon of light ... that life preserver for which they are grasping.

It is with great excitement that we enter this partnership with the University of St. Thomas where students, faculty, staff, and alumni are encouraged to become members of our Radio Maria family as listeners, guests, presenters, interns, and volunteers.

Volunteers and Service We, of course, are

totally listener supported and neither UST faculty experts, nor presenters or interns, will receive payment for their time. They will not only perform a service to the University but also evangelize and share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Please remember Radio Maria in your prayers. Also, our Mariathon is coming up Oct. 28- Nov. 2, and this is a great time to assist financially with

your contribution and pledge in order continue Our Lady's Mission

Please pray for our new partnership with the University of St. Thomas. Pray also for our youth and young adults. Our Blessed Mother put Radio Maria here for a reason. Let us thank her and ask for her continued guidance. May God bless you and your family.

Divine Mercy Movie in theatres Oct. 28 only

See it on the big screen Oct. 28 or purchase the DVD

In the 1930s, our Lord revealed to an unknown religious sister a message for our times.

To an age marked by conflict, despair, lack of respect for human life and dignity, and in need of His forgiveness and merciful love,

He said, "Mankind will not have peace until it turns with trust to My Mercy" (Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska, 300).

Now this incredible true story of St. Faustina and the message of Divine Mercy will be told one night only in more than 700 movie theaters across the United States on Oct. 28, in the new film "Love and Mercy: Faustina."

The docudrama follows the incredible call of

St. Faustina to religious life and the healing effects

of this message on countless people around the

world. The Marian Fathers of

the Immaculate Conception served as consultants for this 120-minute docudrama that was written and directed by Michal Kondrat.

But it quickly grew in popularity into other countries. Radio Maria began broadcasting from its first English-speaking station in the US on May 25, 2000 in Alexandria, La. September 2, 2019 Message to Mirjana

"Dear children, pray! Pray the Rosary every day-- that wreath of flowers which, as a mother, directly connects me with your pains, sufferings, desires, and hopes. Apostles of my love, I am with you through the grace and the love of my Son, and I am asking for prayers of you. The world is in such need of your prayers for souls to be converted. With complete trust, open your hearts to my Son, and in them He will inscribe the summary of His words--which is love. Live in an unbreakable connection with the Most Sacred Heart of my Son. My children, as a mother, I am telling you that it is high time for you to kneel before my Son to acknowledge Him as your God, the center of your life. Offer gifts to Him--that which He most loves-- which is love towards neighbor, mercy, and pure hearts. Apostles of my love, many of my children still do not acknowledge my Son as their God; they have not yet come to know His love. But you, with your prayer pronounced from a pure and open heart, by the gifts which you offer to my Son, will make even the hardest hearts open. Apostles of my love, the strength of prayer pronounced from the heart--a powerful prayer full of love-- changes the world. Therefore, my children: pray, pray, pray. I am with you. Thank you."

September 25, 2019 Message to Marija

"Dear children! Today I am calling you to

pray for my intentions so that I may help you.

Little children, pray the Rosary and meditate on the mysteries of the Rosary because, in your life, you are also passing through joys and sorrows. In this way, you are transforming the mysteries into your life, because life is a mystery until you place it into God's hands.

In this way, you will have the experience of faith like Peter who met Jesus and the Holy Spirit filled his heart. Little children, you are also called to witness by living the love with which, day by day, God wraps you with my presence.

Therefore, little children, be open and pray with the heart in faith.

Thank you for having responded to my call."
