A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR

PASSIONTIDE: The last and most intense phase of Lent

Dear Friends,

This fifth Sunday of Lent begins the period known as Passiontide, which is the last and most intense phase of Lent. As you look around the sanctuary, you will immediately notice that the corpus of the crucified Christ, as well as all the statues, are covered in violet veils. This practice is many centuries old, and has its origins in the former liturgical calendar, in which, on this Sunday, the Gospel reading was taken from the eighth chapter of the Gospel of St. John. This passage says, in part:

"The Jews said to Jesus, `You are not yet fifty years old, and you have seen Abraham?' Jesus said to them, `Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM.' So they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple area."

"Jesus hid himself." Let's think about that: due to the hardness of heart of those who rejected Our Lord (which is all of us, at various times, through sin) the Church recalls this event, and withdraws from our eyes the image of Christ crucified by veiling it, along with the images of the saints, for the duration of Passiontide. The crucifix is unveiled after the Good Friday Liturgy of the Passion and Death of the Lord, and the rest of the images are unveiled just prior to the Easter Vigil.

The veils are of violet, which is the color of penance. This reminds us of the sufferings of Christ, together with our need for penance, in reparation for our sins. This veiling also conveys the deep sorrow which the Church feels over the suffering and death of her Divine Bridegroom, Jesus Christ.

Duncan Stroik, the architect for our CHRIST AT THE CENTER sanctuary project, completed three years ago this month, in an editorial in Sacred Architecture magazine, which he publishes and edits, wrote:

In order to better prepare for Easter, we fast from images and sometimes instruments. For visual and aural people, this is a powerful shock to the system. Statues, paintings, and, in some places, even crucifixes are covered with purple fabric. The saints are there, in form, but we cannot see their image--they are veiled in mystery. It is the last penance of Lent: the giving up of images, which are, theologically, windows into the divine. And then with the Triduum, we do not just fast but we also strip the altar in preparation for the Crucifixion; and on Good Friday we come to church, but there is no Mass. All of this makes the Easter Vigil more spectacular: the Easter fire in darkness and then a single candle leading to a church full of candlelight and the reappearance of the saints, beautiful flowers, and iconography of the Resurrection.

I also want to reiterate that we are especially looking forward to this year's celebrations of Holy Week because, two years ago, as we remember all too well, no one could be in church because of the pandemic, and last year things were not yet back to normal. On Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, nothing is more important than living those days with Our Lord in and through the Church's liturgical celebrations. Please mark your calendars, please plan to be with us!

Through God's grace and our intentional response, let us all live these privileged days of Passiontide intensely and well.

God bless you!

40 HOURS DEVOTION

40 KIDS FOR CHRIST

Last Friday, students from SCSS prayed the beautiful prayer of Consecration of all humanity, and Russia and Ukraine in particular, to the Immaculate Heart of Mary simultaneously with Pope Francis who prayed the same prayer in Rome. Afterwards, the students offered beautiful roses to Jesus.

The act of consecration took place during St. Catherine's 40 HOURS DEVOTION, a period of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament to honor the 40 hours between Christ's burial in the Holy Sepulcher & His Resurrection.

Rel Ed & SCSS students & their families joined 40 Hours Devotion in a new program we called 40 KIDS FOR CHRIST. The 40 Kids for Christ program began ahead of time, as students learned about Adoration during class: what it is, why we do it, and what we do while in Adoration. Age-appropriate materials were available in church to help them focus on Jesus during Adoration.

Highlights of the event included Youth-Led Stations of the Cross on Friday. Students from SCSS and Rel Ed read the meditations. More than 35 kids and their families attended to pray with them. After Adoration, students gathered in the Family Center for pizza and basketball.

Our youngest students were encouraged to write Letters to Jesus which they then left in church with Jesus in a special "mailbox" on the Altar (photo above). Before leaving church, they signed our 40 Kids for Christ poster. In the end we exceeded our goal, with 49 kids visiting Jesus in Adoration!!

How sweet is that!!

The 2022 Annual Bishop's Appeal (formerly the Annual Catholic Appeal), which highlights hope, renewal and evangelization in our diocese, has now begun. This year's theme,

A Bridge Home, calls us to come together as a family of faith, and to invest in services that continue to engage those in their faith and build a strong bridge to many who are struggling. It is more important than ever to reunite our Church, affirm our faithful and welcome others back.

Our parish goal this year is $136,000. We ask each of our families to support our Parish in reaching its goal, by supporting the Appeal as generously as your means will allow.

Calling All Athletes! for Sport Sunday 2022

at St. Catherine's

Sunday, April 24 9:00 am Mass

Hey Kids!!

Do you play a sport? Do you dance? Do you do karate or judo?

Are you a gymnast?

Come to the 9:00am Mass on Sunday, April 24, for a special celebration just for you: St. Catherine's athletes!

Wear your team jersey, jacket or warm-up gear (church appropriate, please).

Athletes will receive a blessing from Father Marcello.

Then! Come to the Family Center for some donuts and shoot some hoops.

Everyone is Welcome!

PRAY FOR THE UNBORN: Lord, Creator of Life, you have blessed us with the privilege of bringing new life into the world. May your Holy Spirit open our hearts and minds to recognize Your special gift of children, and Your great love for each of us created in Your image and likeness. You sent Your son Jesus to redeem us and through love He entered our world. We now turn to Mary, our Mother, for her intercession as we struggle to protect innocent unborn children. Following Mary's example may we proclaim the truth of our faith, assist those in crisis and protect those most vulnerable. We ask this through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.
