Fool or Foil?

A foil’s complimentary role (villain or sometimes a side kick) may be emphasized by physical characteristics.

Examples: Fat v. Thin, Young v. Old, Tall v. Short, Handsome v. Ugly, Logical v. Insane

Directions:

1. Find a foil for each character listed below. (There may be more than one acceptable answer – it depends on your reasoning and explanation.)

2. Explain why he or she is a dramatic foil to the character that is listed. How is the character used to highlight the main character?

Dramatic Foil Assignment

Requirements:

You must include one example of a character and his/her foil in Romeo and Juliet

✓ Include a drawing of the pair (neat, creative, colorful)

✓ Include 3-4 statements (bullet points) that explain how the characters are connected or how the foil is used to highlight unique qualities of the other character

Exit Ticket:

At the end of the hour on Friday, you will participate in a Gallery Walk of all of your classmate’s assignments. On your exit ticket, you will answer the following two questions:

1. Who came up with the best example of a dramatic foil in Romeo and Juliet and why is this example better than the others?

2. Whose is the most unique example of a dramatic foil? Why?
