OBJECTIVES AND ACTIONS FOR 2007-2008

Establish cogongrass-free zones across the county; around boundaries and containment areas; and where outliers are.

Define control lines and containment areas, posting a map of each zone online with the local control coordinator’s contact information.

Work with adjacent counties to establish cogongrass-free zones and invasives management programs.

Establish neighborhood control programs.

Identify outlier landowners and develop strategies for addressing these infestations.

Assure that all cogongrass on public forest/conservation lands is being appropriately treated/monitored/retreated and establish control programs on inholdings and buffers.

Assure that public forest/conservation land managers have resources to

treat cogongrass effectively.

Establish control programs on inholdings and buffer lands.

Assess cogongrass management needs on private timberlands and address them through community efforts and a countywide program.

Work with Rayonier and Plum Creek to develop/implement control strategies for their lands.

Evaluate cogongrass infestation in the Ft. McCoy area and establish a

neighborhood control program.

Work with FDOF to educate timberland owners about cogongrass and assist

them in removing it.

See that cogongrass eradication programs are established on road, railroad, and utility ROWs.

See that county and FDOT road crews receive the support they need to eradicate cogongrass.

Map cogongrass infestations on utility corridors and establish programs

for eliminating them.

Persuade CSX to map and manage cogongrass along their ROWs.

Develop procedures for cost-effectively coordinating treatments across property lines.

Facilitate communication/cooperation between agencies, large landowners, and ROW managers.

Develop landowner assistance program.

Develop mechanisms to prevent cogongrass spread via movement of equipment or materials.

Work with DPI to stop sale/transportation of baled cogongrass.

Educate quarry/mine owners and assist them in eliminating cogongrass around their facilities.

Work with law school, county, and industry to stop cogongrass movement via fill or machinery.

Facilitate information exchange.

Use websites to provide information about cogongrass control techniques, strategies, and programs.

Use websites to provide basic ID and control information for other Marion County invasive plants.

Provide information and direct citizens to website resources via flyers distributed at meetings/festivals.

Maintain close cooperation/communication with the press.
