Garbage & Refuse Collection Information

Household Hazardous Waste & Other Items

? Vegetative Waste such as Grass, Leaves and other Yard Waste materials may no longer be placed with other Solid Waste for disposal, but is now required to be Recycled as required by NJDEP.

? Grass, Leaves, Yard Waste consisting of hedge and bush clippings, weeds and other vegetative materials when packed in biodegradable bags or tied in bundles weighing less than fifty (50) pounds is now picked-up curbside on Wednesdays all year round from January to December.

? Only Vegetative Waste placed in biodegradable bags will be picked-up on designated collection days. Material placed in plastic bags will NOT be picked-up.

? Bags and bundles must be placed at the curb no later than 6:00 am on the day of collection or no earlier than 7:00pm on the day before collection.

? Biodegradable Kraft paper bags are available for sale from the Public Works Administration Office at 10 Commerce Court at a cost of $ 0.35 per bag.

? Brush, tree limbs, tree trunks, bushes, shrubs and tree roots greater the 2" in diameter or not capable of being tied in bundles or placed in biodegradable bags are the responsibility of the owner/tenant to properly dispose of.

? Residents are reminded that raking or blowing of leaves or other vegetative waste into the street is unsafe and prohibited by Township Ordinance 123-2 C.

Construction & Remodeling Materials

Construction /Remodeling Materials, such as concrete, concrete or cement cinder blocks, bricks, asphalt, slate, railroad ties, plywood, metal or wooden fencing, doors, roofing materials, plaster, sheetrock, lumber, paint, earth, sheds, stones, rocks, windows, sinks, tubs, cabinets, ceramic tile, insulation materials, pane glass, leaders and gutters, remodeling materials, siding materials, and other construction material are the responsibility of the owner, tenant, or occupant to dispose of properly and will NOT be picked up by the township. Residents requiring disposal of these materials must contact a private disposal company for pick-up and not place these items at the curb.

Verona provides twice per week collection of garbage/ refuse and disposes of approximately 5,000 tons of material annually at the Essex County Incinerator through its collection contractor. The residents are requested to place their normal household garbage/ refuse for collection curbside not earlier that 7pm on the night before the scheduled collection day, nor later than 6 am on the day of collection in accordance with the schedule. In addition, residents are also asked to place their items for collection in refuse containers or sealed rodent resistant disposable bags weighing less than 50 lbs. Please note, this is the official calendar of collection dates for the Township of Verona.

Normal household waste includes garbage and/or refuse of any kind incidental to the normal operation of the household and/or business, but does not include the following items:

Recyclables, Newspaper, Junk Mail and Magazines, Commingled Materials, Electronic Waste, Grass, Leaves/Yard Waste, Tires, Motor Oil, Mixed Paper, Paint Cans or Other Hazardous Household Waste, Corrugated Cardboard, Chipboard, Bulky Waste, White Goods, Construction/Remodeling Materials, NiCd Rechargeable Batteries.

All of these materials should not be included in your garbage for disposal, but separated and handled in accordance with this brochure's guidance.

Residents are encouraged to separate these materials from the household as means for reducing the township's disposal costs and to help improve our environment.

Propane Tanks

Empty propane tanks can be dropped-off at the Recycling Center only after receiving a permit from Public Works for $5.00 per tank. Public Works Office at 10 Commerce Court is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Be Safe With Hazardous Waste

Products used for cleaning, home improvements, automobile maintenance, and lawn and garden care contain ingredients that can harm human health and the environment. Properly disposing of these hazardous products will keep our community safe and clean.

Household Hazardous Waste Regulated by the Essex County Utilities Authority

The Essex County Utilities Authority sponsors a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day for County residents in May and October of each year.

Latex Paint- Pour the contents of the latex paint can on a newspaper, let dry, and then dispose the newspapers in with your regular household garbage. Place the empty latex paint can at the curb for the Bulky and White Goods Collection day.

Oil-Based Paint- Dispose of at one of the Essex County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days.

Used Clothing- Gently used clothing and shoes may be brought to the recycling center and placed in the designated collection container for donation.

Cooking Oil and Grease- Help keep our sewer system flowing! Place cooled cooking oil, poultry and meat fats in a sealed non-recyclable container and discard with your regular garbage.

Environmental Commission

The Verona Environmental Commission (VEC) was established by Ordinance No. 9-92 in 1992, consistent with state laws creating environmental commissions. The Commission is comprised of seven members (one of whom is also a member of the Planning Board) plus two alternates. All VEC members are Verona residents and serve without compensation. The chairperson and regular members are appointed by the Town Manager, and Alternates are appointed by the governing body. In addition, a member of the Town Council attends commission meetings and acts as a liaison between the Commission and the Council.

VEC public meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month (except August) from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the Conference Room of the Verona Community Center, 880 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona, New Jersey. All Meetings are subject to change, check the website for the most up to date schedule.

Shade Tree Commission

The Verona Shade Tree Commission is responsible for the care of our public trees, shrubs, and landscapes. The commission is comprised of volunteers who are residents designated by the Township Manager.

Public Shade Tree Commission meetings are held the 2nd Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the Verona Community Center Conference Room, 880 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona, New Jersey. All Meetings are subject to change, check the website for the most up to date schedule.
