Adam: A Type of Christ

Adam - A Type of Christ

Romans 5:14-19 1 Corinthians 15:22, 45-49

Thesis:

To show a biblical comparison of Adam and Christ,

Which we can learn something about Jesus.

Introduction:

The Old Testament contains types of New Testament anti-types.

A type is a “representative form” or “characteristic” of something else.

Adam is a type of Jesus Christ.

Judaism was never intended by God to be his final revelation to man,

But contains types, figures, patterns and shadows of New Testament anti-types.

Hebrews 9:9 (KJV)

9 Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;

Hebrews 9:23 (KJV)

23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

Hebrews 10:1-2 (KJV)

1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

O/T types perfectly fit the N/T church, its doctrine and in Christ.

Therefore, we can learn something about the Lord by examining O/T types.

Types confirm the church to be the fulfillment of the will of God

Ephesians 3:10-11 (KJV)

10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

Body:

Comparisons between Adam and Christ.

1. Adam was created by miracle

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Isaiah 7:14 (KJV)

14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

2. Adam is the head of the physical family

1 Corinthians 15:45-49 (KJV)

45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.

2. Jesus is the head of the spiritual family

Ephesians 3:14-15 (KJV)

14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

3. Adam underwent deep sleep

Genesis 2:21 (KJV)

21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

3. Jesus experienced the sleep of death (from which he also arose)

John 19:30 (KJV)

30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

4. Adam’s side was opened

Genesis 2:21 (KJV)

21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

4. Jesus’ side was opened, too

John 19:34 (KJV)

34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

5. From Adam a rib was taken

Genesis 2:21 (KJV)

21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

5. Jesus shed his blood

John 19:34 (KJV)

34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

6. From Adam’s rib woman was formed

Genesis 2:22 (KJV)

22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

6. With Jesus’ blood the church was purchased

Acts 20:28 (KJV)

28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

7. Adam named his bride (generally, “woman”; specifically, “Eve”)

Genesis 2:23 (KJV)

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

7. Jesus named his bride (“churches of Christ”; specifically, “Christians”)

Romans 16:16 (KJV)

16 Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you.

Acts 11:26 (KJV)

26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

8. Adam and Eve cleaved to each other

Genesis 2:24 (KJV)

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

8. Christians should cleave to the Lord and each other

Luke 14:26 (KJV)

26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

Romans 12:10 (KJV)

10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another;

9. Adam’s family is propagated through seed

Genesis 1:27-28 (KJV)

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.

9. The family of Christ is also propagated by seed (which is the Word of God),

Luke 8:11 (KJV)

11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

Observations and lessons.

Adam, representative of humanity, introduced sin into the world,

Which led to death, the consequence of sin.

Romans 5:14-19 (KJV)

14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.

17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Jesus Christ, representative of the Godhead,

Introduced righteousness into the world, which leads to life.

1 Corinthians 15:22 (KJV)

22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

In both cases, individuals participate by their actions in either,

Sin and death or righteousness and life.

Adam and Jesus Christ brought opposite gifts to mankind.

However, in both cases, mankind must procure either gift.

What the creation (Adam) failed to do for himself,

The Creator (Jesus) did for mankind.

1 Corinthians 15:45 (KJV)

45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

Adam was a physical being, yet bore the image of God (a Spirit Being).

Adam, by sin, allowed the physical side to err and overcome the spiritual side.

Jesus Christ, himself a Spirit Being, re-introduced the spiritual into the world.

Christians will bear the image of the spiritual over the image of our earthly existence.

Conclusion:

Examining types and their anti-types (fulfillments),

One can easily see some of the significant features of the anti-type.

The anti-type (in this case, Jesus) is more important than the type.

Though we are dual beings, possessing both body and spirit,

We must nurture the spirit rather than gratifying lusts of the flesh.

Adam introduced sin and death,

Whereas Jesus introduced righteousness and life.

Christians must follow Jesus instead of Adam.

Invitation:

Jesus Christ is our perfect example,

And if we follow Jesus he will lead us to heaven

1 Peter 2:21 (KJV)

21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

If we obey Christ, he will save us

Hebrews 5:8-9 (KJV)

8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

If we love Christ, we will obey him

John 14:15 (KJV)

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

His commandments relative to salvation include:

John 8:32 (KJV)

32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Luke 13:3 (KJV)

3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Matthew 10:32 (KJV)

32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

Mark 16:16 (KJV)

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Revelation 2:10 (KJV)

10 be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
