At the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, Traverse City SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST Elementary School in Traverse City, Michigan had to have special permission to open their doors with only 4 students. With so many private and public schools in the Grand Traverse area, it became increasingly clear that we desperately needed more exposure to the community. We also realized that we needed to develop an information packet that we could provide to prospective parents that would explain pertinent aspects of our school program. Out of these realizations came the following documents:

• Business Card
• Explanation about the School
• Contact Information for the Principal, Teachers, Pastor, School Board Positions, and the Conference Office
• Fees and Tuition Information
• Explanation about the Curriculum
• Testing and Test Scores Information
• Tentative School Calendar
We are very blessed to have several photographers in our district. One of them came and spent several hours at the school taking pictures of the staff and students. Then she designed the school brochure off of information we provided for her. This particular part of the process was a bit pricy, but definitely worth it.
Vista Print is an inexpensive way to get business cards. They also print postcards and yard signs. The main goal of this process is exposure (after you develop a marketable program).
The folders weren’t expensive and we used color copy paper for the information pages. The welcome letter was printed on parchment paper to make it look a little more professional. The final thing that we did was to stagger the information pages. That way the titles are all visible on each page and the information is easy to access.
To stagger the pages, simply print everything at the top of the page. Then cut off the bottom of the page so it is slightly shorter than the page behind it. (Just make sure the title of each page is visible.)
We just began distributing these information packets to interested parents at the end of the 2013-2014 school year. We will also be using these with our visitations over the summer.

• Healthy Lifestyle Choices: a balanced lifestyle including the 8 keys to healthy living – Nutrition, Exercise, Water Intake, Sunshine, Moderation in all things, Fresh air, Rest, Trust in God.
Our small class sizes encourage attention to the individual needs of each student. In addition to the standard academic curriculum, the following enrichment courses are offered: music, fine arts, visual arts, performing arts, modern languages, and public speaking. Each classroom has access to the Internet, and students use technology for enrichment, research, and projects.
This year, we have implemented several changes to the school-wide program. Please read the accompanying material carefully as information in the handbook is being updated. Tuition is billed on a monthly basis over a period of 10 months. Multiple student discounts exist for families who enroll more than one child in school.
It is understood that parents will support fund-raisers either through purchases or sales. Also, extra fees will occur for field trips, fund-raisers, and other activities.

CURRICULUM
Traverse City Seventh-day Adventist Elementary School uses a Bible-based curriculum developed by the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists that teaches that God is actively involved in our lives and longs to have a personal relationship with each one of us. While standards are set by the education system on the national level, we do not use the Common Core, and in many cases Seventh-day Adventist standards exceed the public school standards by at least a grade level.
Adventist education addresses the whole child and is geared toward connecting instruction with real-life experiences. God is presented in all subjects. Lessons are interconnected to help students see the connected nature of life and faith.
Special attention is given to developing skills and ability in music, art and industry, completing a full education of the child. Students are taught an understanding of concepts connected to fine arts and encouraged to develop an appreciation for art and music.
Students are encouraged to develop a close, personal relationship with God. Prayer and Bible study are an integral part of our daily experience at Traverse City Seventh-day Adventist Elementary school. While we strive for academic excellence, our utmost concern is the connection that our students have with Jesus.
TESTING AND TEST SCORES
Prior to acceptance to Traverse City Seventh-day Adventist Elementary School, students are tested for placement. The purpose of placement testing is to provide your children the best possible education. To do that, we need to know what their ability and skill set is. This will help the teacher to better meet the needs of each child.
Each fall our students take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Studies show that students who attend Adventist schools outperform the national average in all subjects. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills tests Reading, Written Expression, Vocabulary, Mathematics and Computation, Social Studies and Science. Locally, students at Traverse City Seventh-day Adventist Elementary School are testing on average at least half a grade level above their current grade placement.

Not only do students score a half-grade-level higher in all subjects, but the more years they attend an Adventist school, the more their average achievement jumps – up to the 73rd percentile.

GNOCA offers small class sizes, low student-teacher ratio, and a community of learners who respect everyone’s right to learn.
Testing
Each fall all GNOCA students in grades 3 – 8 take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Over the past four years, students routinely show one to two grade levels of improvement from the previous year’s scores. 75% of all 7th and 8th graders are testing at a beginning college level.
Students are also tested on sight-reading and comprehension three times a year. More than 75% of all students scored at least one grade above their grade level.
