e-NEWS January 7, 2007

Happy New Year to all our Family and Friends,

Here are some upcoming events in which you may be interested:

1/10/07 Join Volunteer San Diego and their co-sponsor the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest at 6:00pm for a special screening of the movie "Twisted". The event is free and open to the public. We will be joined by special guest, Twisted's filmmaker Laurel Chiten. A discussion following the film will address dystonia itself as well as how dystonia patients and others with disabilities can become engaged as volunteers in their communities. The panel will feature leading physicians, patient and Leader of the Dystonia Support & Advocacy Group of San Diego County, Martha Murphy, and Karen Leventhal, Director of the Tarjan Center Service Inclusion Project at UCLA.

TWISTED tells the stories of people who live with dystonia, a neurological disorder that forces your muscles to twist into abnormal, often painful, movements or postures. Pat Brogan, a basketball coach and triathlete who developed dystonia after a bike accident; Shari Tritt, whose dystonia affects her whole body, and Remy Campbell, an artist who gambled on a radical form of brain surgery--and won. Together, these individuals try to answer the question, when you are trapped inside your body, what will set you free?

A high turnout is expected, so please help by calling 858-636-4124 to register. If you have any further questions, email Jessica End at jend@ or visit

3/19-24/07 The Annual International Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference will be held at the Los Angeles Hilton, Marriott and Renaissance Hotels. This is the largest and longest-running conference showcasing the latest in Assistive Technology.

EDUCATION:

Read the most recent document from the U. S. Department of Education regarding the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS) under the new IDEA Regulations –

The reauthorized Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was signed into law on Dec. 3, 2004, by President George W. Bush. The provisions of the Act became effective on July 1, 2005, with the exception of some of the elements pertaining to the definition of a “highly qualified teacher” that took effect upon the signing of the Act. The final NIMAS was published on July 19, 2006 (71 FR 41084) and was included as Appendix C to Part 300--National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard--published on August 14, 2006. This is one in a series of documents, prepared by the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) in the U.S. Department of Education that covers a variety of high-interest topics and brings together the regulatory requirements related to those topics to support constituents in preparing to implement the new regulations.1 This document addresses statutory and final regulatory requirements regarding NIMAS.
