Teaching Service

1984. Respiratory Physiology and Medicine, Third Year Course in the Medical School, Course organizer: Faculty of Health Sciences, Ben-Gurion University, Beersheba, Israel

A 6 week systems related course on the respiratory system: Included histology, anatomy, pathophysiology and clinical medicine for both adult and pediatric respiratory diseases and critical care medicine. I was course organizer, wrote the syllabus, and spent approximately 36 hours teaching over the 6 weeks (the amount per day varied). My direct teaching responsibilities included all of the basic physiology teaching, both didactic as well as in the form of lecture – demonstrations. I also participated in the teaching of the pathophysiology of certain respiratory diseases, e.g. COPD, asthma, and some of the clinical teaching – including lung cancer and infections. There were 45 – 50 students enrolled each year. I also supervised groups of students (5 – 8) per group for 2 hours per day, total of 3 days, for teaching rounds on respiratory patients. In addition to teaching, my duties included arranging the teaching schedule, reviewing student evaluations of the course and individual instructors, and organizing and grading the final exam. Feedback was provided to the Dean’s office and conferences were held with the instructors. I organized the administration of the final exam and make up exams. I also was responsible for counseling students during the course and providing feedback between students and faculty.

1984. Respiratory Physiology, First Year Course in the Medical School, Faculty of Health Sciences, Ben-Gurion University, Beersheba, Israel

My responsibilities included teaching most of the basic respiratory and some of the cardiovascular physiology to Year I students. These were geared more to general mammalian physiology rather than clinical medicine. I taught approximately 10 hours over a 5 week period. Teaching was primarily didactic. However, I also conducted groups of 4 – 5 students on clinical rounds that were meant to serve as an introduction to the clinic. Each year I spent approximately 6 hours (2 sessions with 2 groups of students).

1984. Advanced Cardiopulmonary Physiology to senior and graduate students in the Department of Biology, Ben-Gurion University, Beersheba, Israel

This was a course taught in the graduate school, and was listed in the graduate school. It was open to undergraduate seniors and graduate students. I was the course instructor and organizer. Teaching consisted of twice weekly sessions of 2 hours each for a semester. Teaching was in the form of lectures (half the sessions) and lecture demonstrations (in the physiology laboratory). There were 8 – 10 students in the course. In addition to teaching all the sessions, I created the syllabus, wrote and graded the final exam. I also supervised 2 graduate students who assisted with the lecture – demonstrations.

1991 - 1994 Advanced cardiopulmonary physiology to pulmonary and cardiology fellows: Course organizer, Long Island Jewish Medical Center

This course is taught every other summer for 10 weeks, one hour per week and is mandatory for fellows in the Pulmonary and Critical Division and open to Cardiology Fellows. Total enrollment approximately 10. The focus of the course is to review advanced principles in Cardiopulmonary physiology as they relate to clinical medicine and the treatment of critically ill patients. The material is based on my second book (Cardiopulmonary Physiology for Critical Care) and covered such diverse areas as: cardiac muscle contraction, concepts of pressure/flow and pressure volume relations, control of venous return and cardiac output, determination of maximum airflow, pulmonary mechanics, respiratory muscle function, and cardiopulmonary interactions.

1992- 1996 Yearly lectures in pulmonary pathophysiology, City University of New York

This was one lecture per year on pulmonary hypertension to second year students at the City University of New York Medical School. Number of students: 25

1993- 1997 Respiratory Physiology to MD PhD Students: course organizer: Albert Einstein College of Medicine

As part of the MD PhD program, in the first year students were given a physiology course over the first year. The respiratory section was 4 hours per week over 8 weeks (one day per week in the Spring). I was course organizer, was responsible for organizing the syllabus and final exam as well as grading the final exam. I was also responsible for feedback between the instructors and students. I personally taught half the sessions (total 16 hours). Our mission was to avoid the typical didactic basic physiology lecture and to focus on review of landmark papers in the field as a teaching tool. This was extremely challenging and necessitated a fair amount of adaptation on the part of both the instructors and the students.

1994 - 2002 Scientific Basis of research and practice of medical subspecialties - given to all clinical and research fellows in the Department of Internal Medicine: course organizer; Long Island Jewish Medical Center

This course was given within the framework of the Department of Medicine and is mandatory for all fellows for all divisions within the department. The course is given every other year for a semester, once per week for one hour per week. I am the originator and organizer of the course. I am responsible for developing the syllabus, obtaining instructors, and obtaining feedback from fellows and instructors. I personally teach 4 – 5 of the lectures. The premise of the course was that all subspecialty boards require didactic instruction in the scientific basis of advanced medical practice for certification. Review of the requirements revealed certain common trends, which formed the basis of the syllabus. Material covered includes: Introduction to research methodology, basic statistics, principles of clinical trials, molecular biologic basis of disease, cellular biology and disease, meta-analysis, signal

processing, immunology – principles and testing, and ethics and regulatory principles of medical research. Number of fellows: 16 – 20.

1988 - 2002 Instructor in Board Review Course to Medical Residents

Total of 2 – 4 hours of didactic lectures on respiratory topics - part of the board review course given to medical residents at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. I taught between 2 to 4 lectures each year. Topics included: pulmonary function testing, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary thromboembolism, COPD. Each lecture was 1 hour long – requiring approximately 1 hour preparation time.

2000 - Respiratory Physiology/Pathophysiolgy (second year): Medical School for International Health, Ben-Gurion University, Beersheba, Israel, under the auspices of Columbia University, New York

This course is organized as part of the International MD Program at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. This program, developed in cooperation with Columbia University consists of an American style medical curriculum, taught in English to students from around the world. The respiratory section of the course is, interestingly, based on the original respiratory course I organized in 1980 for the Israeli program at BGU. I travel each year to Israel as guest lecturer to the Faculty of Health Sciences at BGU. I teach all of the respiratory physiology and a fair amount of the pathophysiology to second year students in the program. Over the 3 weeks I spend each year I spend approximately 30 hours in the classroom giving didactic lectures to the students. I also run a review session (ask me anything) in respiratory physiology and pathophysiology towards the end of the course (2 – 3 hours). I am responsible for writing the exam questions in respiratory physiology and much of pathophysiology. Number of students 40 - 50. I also round on the internal medicine service with students in year III on the internal medicine wards.

2002 - 2006 Member course coordinating committee: Pathophysiology and Therapeutics course for second year medical students, University of Maryland School of Medicine. Duties included curriculum planning for the entire course, as well as recruitment of instructors in the pulmonary topics (major lectures and small groups), and organizing the teaching cases for the pulmonary small groups sessions (see below). I also review the individual instructor evaluations for the pulmonary section of the course.

2003 - 2006 Instruction to 2nd year students in Pathophysiology and Therapeutics course – Small group organizer for COPD and asthma, lecture in sleep disordered breathing.

I organized the small group sessions on COPD and asthma in the 2nd year P&T course. As part of the reorganization of this part of the course, I introduced taped patient interviews for the asthma and COPD sections, which were coordinated with clinical, pathological and physiological data in the context of the small group sessions. The students gave excellent ratings to this. I was a small group instructor (15 – 20 students per group) for both the asthma and COPD small group sessions. I have been pushing for inclusion of more sleep-related lectures in the context of this and other courses. I have been informed that for the coming SY an additional hour will be given for understanding the role of sleep disturbances and sleep disorders in respiratory and other disease processes. I will be teaching this additional teaching hour.

2003 - Instruction to 2nd year students in Pathophysiology and Therapeutics Course – I lecture to the second year students on sleep apnea and sleep disturbances, and I am an instructor for small groups sessions in sleep apnea, asthma, COPD, and pulmonary function testing.

2002 - Clinical teaching responsibilities at University of Maryland.

I attend at the VA on the ICU/pulmonary consult service 1.5 months per year. I round with the medical house staff each morning for 2 – 3 hours in the ICU on this service. I try to incorporate teaching minilectures (20 – 30 minutes long) 2 – 3 morning per week. I also supervise the pulmonary fellow on rotation in consults and bronchoscopies.

I run the University of Maryland sleep clinic two mornings per week. There are always at least two fellows at each session. Residents also may elect to participate in this clinic from neurology, psychiatry, pulmonary and internal medicine for one month rotations. I supervise the residents and fellows in evaluation and management of sleep disorders.

Once a week, there is a teaching session on interpretation of sleep studies. This is attended by the sleep fellows and residents on rotation on rotation in the sleep service. Additionally, there is a teaching conference for the sleep medicine and pulmonary fellows called the “multidisciplinary” conference.

2003 - 2006 Lecturer and course co-organizer for Pulmonary Fellows for core curriculum: Cardiopulmonary physiology. The course was supplanted by an all-year lecture series in basic pulmonary biology, which I organized (see below).

This was part of the core curriculum given to pulmonary fellows. I organized the physiology part of the course. There were a total of 8 weekly 1-hour lectures for this part of the course. I delivered 5 of these. Preparation time for each is approximately 1 hour. Number of fellows/residents: 10.

2003 - 2006 Lecturer in basic research course for fellows in Dept. of Medicine: 2 lecturers given on 1) Research Methods; 2) The role of the Physician-Scientist. Each lecture lasted 1 hour.

This is a 2-week course on basic research techniques offered to fellows in the Dept. of Medicine who are engaged in laboratory research. The syllabus is available at . Number of fellows: 20

2004 - 2008 Course organizer: CME course; New Horizons in Sleep. This is a course given at the Univ of Maryland, University Specialty Hospital to focus on newer findings and viewpoints in sleep medicine. Number of attendees: approximately 35.

2005 - 2008 Pulmonary Biology: Weekly noontime course in basic pulmonary physiology. Course organizer and gives all of the physiology lectures. This is a course covering basic pulmonary biology including physiology, inflammation, molecular biology, and principles of physiological measurement, altitude and diving physiology, sleep, statistics and other such diverse topics. This course goes over a 2 year period. Number of fellows: 12.

2006 - Core Course in Sleep Medicine (“Sleep Boot camp”). Multidisciplinary course in sleep medicine. Participate in Organizing the course and deliver 4 of the lectures. Given to Fellows/residents/attendings in Pulmonary, Neurology, Pediatrics, ENT and others interested.

2007 - 2009 Course organizer of Respiratory System Section of Functional Systems (Physiology) Course to the first year medical students. Teaches half the lectures, organizes small groups sessions.
