ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN MEDICAL COLLEGES RANKINGS According to the Association for American Medical Colleges (AAMC) profile data, UMSOM continues to rank in the Top 10 (8th) among all public medical schools, and 26th among all 151 public and private medical schools nationwide.

The AAMC data also shows that our faculty has one of the highest levels of productivity in the United States. Across all schools, the mean funding per principal investigator is $300,000. At the UMSOM, the mean funding per principal investigator is $416,006, placing us in the top 15th percentile of productivity of all medical schools.

BLUE RIDGE REPORT Over half of our academic departments are ranked in the top 20 for research funding among all medical schools in the nation.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine

Now in its third century, the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) was chartered in 1807 as the first public medical school in the United States. It continues today as one of the fastest growing, top-tier biomedical research enterprises in the world -- with 43 academic departments, centers, institutes, and programs; and a faculty of more than 3,000 physicians, scientists, and allied health professionals, including members of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences, and a distinguished recipient of the Albert E. Lasker Award in Medical Research.

With an operating budget of more than $1 billion, the UMSOM works closely in partnership with the University of Maryland Medical Center and Medical System to provide research-intensive, academic and clinicallybased care for more than 1.2 million patients each year.

The UMSOM has over 2,500 students, residents, and fellows, and nearly $550 million in extramural funding, with most of its academic departments highly ranked among all medical schools in the nation in research funding. As one of the seven professional schools that make up the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus, the UMSOM has a total workforce of nearly 7,000 individuals. With 430,000 square feet, Health Sciences Research Facility (HSRF III) is the largest academic building ever constructed in the University System of Maryland.

The new facility, the 15th research building on the UMSOM campus, will enable the School of Medicine to accelerate biomedical discoveries and target the most serious diseases that cause morbidity, mortality, and disability.

It will expand UMSOM's footprint of academic and research space by 20 percent to nearly 2.5 million sq. ft., house more than 400 personnel, and generate an estimated $107.4 million in annual research funding.

HSRF III will support 1,128 jobs in the state and create an estimated $8 million in state and local government revenues.
