Masks---for Droplet Precautions

CHKD Protocol for Respiratory Protection for Respiratory Viral Pathogens

When to use masks and when to use N95 respirators.

Masks---for Droplet Precautions

When caring for patients with respiratory symptoms, follow droplet isolation: wear mask, eye protection, gown and gloves.

You may wear the same mask for several patient encounters IF you do not touch the front and it remains clean and dry. It is not intended for an entire shift, as it would likely become too wet. You may NOT place it on a desk, under your chin, on your elbow, etc. This would require the mask to be discarded, and a new one used.

When caring for patients with concern for COVID-19. Mask the patient and any ill family members, then follow the same contact/droplet isolation with eye protection/mask/gown/gloves.

N95 Respirator---for aerosolizing procedures

.Wear N95 Respirator when caring for COVID-19 PUI when performing aerosolizing procedures: intubation, nebulizer administration, BiPAP, HFNC, open suctioning. Nasopharyngeal swabbing is not an aerosolizing procedure.

You may reuse your N95 IF it remains clean and dry, and is placed into a PAPER bag. Do NOT touch the outside of the mask, and use the strings to don/doff.

COVID-19 is spread by DROPLET, similar to influenza. Please use the same precaution that you

would be doing for any viral respiratory illness.
