MASLOW’S HIERARCHY - APPLIED

Description: In 1943 Abraham Maslow, one of the founding fathers of the humanistic approach to psychology, wrote an influential paper that set out five essential human needs and their hierarchical nature. The lower the needs in the hierarchy, the more essential they are and the more a person will tend to abandon the higher needs in order to pay attention to sufficiently meeting the lower needs.

For example, when we are ill, we care little for what others think about us: all we want is to get better.

Application: Maslow’s theory is still used in advertising, business, and various other fields. While the original theory has been modified many times and many ways, the basic principle that human needs can be classified in a hierarchal format still remains.

Activity: Choose one of the following scenarios and explain in at least a full page-go over to be safe!! (regular margins; 12 point font; and simple- single spaced heading of name and date) how Maslow’s original five-stage model can be applied.

1. (You are a government advisor) The United States has decided to aid a Middle Eastern country in developing an independent society. The country has been embroiled in violence, illegal smuggling, and poverty for years. Create an extensive plan for installing a long-term independent society- “building” the society from the ground up.

2. (You are a social worker) A woman has suffered years of abuse from her husband, both verbal and physical. She was afraid to leave because she was as stay-at-home mom with no source of income. She has recently relocated with her children and obtained a Protection From Abuse (PFA) against her husband. Create an extensive plan for improving this women’s future. What steps will she need to make? (Side note- she doesn’t need a new husband to be happy….this is a common, unnecessary, answer.)
