(EDC) seek educator teams of approximately five teachers within the same school from 10 districts to participate in the second year of a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Computer Science (CS) and Science, Technology/Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Integration and Collaboration (CS-STEM) Program. The purpose of the program is to integrate computer science with science and mathematics education in elementary schools (grades 1-6). The program aims to create new models for teaching and learning through innovative curriculum and class materials.Participating school teams will contribute to the review and piloting of STEM Integration Modules (STEM I-Mods) to facilitate implementation of computational thinking in elementary mathematics and science lessons. These I-Mods were developed using the Massachusetts Digital Literacy and Computer Science (DLCS), Mathematics Framework which includes a strand focused on computational thinking. There are 2 to 3 I-Mods developed per grades 1 through 6. School teams that apply should consist of teachers that will be teaching grades 1-6 in the 2017-2018 school year.A two-year commitment to the program is required from educator participants and their schools/districts. ESE anticipates selecting up to 10 districts and 55 team members representing a diverse spectrum of backgrounds, experiences, and regions including:Urban and suburban districtsEconomically diverse districtsSchool teams comprised of educators who currently teach grades 1-6Educators who teach mathematics or science or bothEducators who teach computer scienceEducators of students with disabilities and English language learners (ELLs)Educators who may have incorporated computer science in mathematics, literacy, history, economics, arts, comprehensive health, or vocational/technical courses.Expectations of Selected School TeamsA two-year commitment to the program is required as follows:August 2017 - 2018August 2018 - 2019Teacher participation in a professional development, including a modest pre-reading/online assignments: August 11 - 12 and 3 to 4 days during the school year. Topics include:MA DLCS FrameworkComputational ThinkingI-ModsTeacher participation in a two-day professional development, including a modest pre-reading assignment.Administrator participation in a half day PD program August 11.Teacher participation in a DLCS Professional Learning Community.Teacher will pilot 2 to 3 I-Mods and participate in the Pilot observation and review process.Teacher participation in a DLCS Professional Learning Community.Application and Selection ProcessThe ESE is now accepting applications from districts for school teams for the CS-STEM Program.
