The Soulwinning Booth Manual for the Fairs, Festivals, & Flea Markets

I. Introduction:

“And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.” Luke 14:23.

1] The Soulwinning Booth is managed by people who are motivated by nothing but commpassion and desire to see people saved. There is no self-glory working in a hot or cold booth where other booths are not interested and sometimes hostile. There is not the appeal and prestige of a large audience. Since present or future salaries are not enticing, allurement of money does not hold the workers. Constantly away from home, sleeping in tight quarters, and eating at different places, is not an easy way to live.

2] The operation of the Soulwinning Booth is in direct obedience to Christ’s command to go out into the “highways and hedges” and compel them to come in to the Lord’s house. God blesses faith and obedience to His commands.

3] Since the Soulwinning Booth is on the high-way and by-way of a large number of people, numerous contacts are made. Many of these people are lonely, some desperate, just moving around without any specific purpose on their minds. Many are ripe for the Gospel. Some have been prayed for and witnessed to but have not had anyone to simply open the Bible and show them how to be saved.

4] At the Soulwinning Booth lost people find someone who has gone out of the way(a very and unusual way) to show concern for them. At the booth they find attention pure, sincere, and simple without any show of the usual singing, amens, and service specials. It is just one-on-one concern and presentation of Jesus Christ who died for them. I noticed that being given the plan of salvation from an open Bible in the Soulwinning Booth next to passing traffic was no obstacle. The inquirers attention were usually completely on the upon the soulwinner, listening intently to have the presentation of the Gospel of Christ. What a Savior we have! Christ went way out of the way for the Samaritan woman at the well to give her the water of life. Jesus said, ”Blessed is that servant whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.”, Luke 12:43.

5] At the Soulwinning Booth they are presented with nothing but the pure true Gospel of Christ. Here they have read to them from the (King James Bible) that show them:

a) Why they must be saved

b) How they must be saved

c) What they must do to be saved

d) How they can know they are saved

At many churches they would have to visit many services to ever get so many scriptures so plainly presented on salvation. So many churches assume that the Gospel is known. At some churches they would never get it.

6] The Soulwinning Booth demonstrates God still blesses the preaching of the Gospel of Christ. People will still respond to compassion, love, and faith if the Gospel is presented and explained. Jude :22 “And of some having compassion, making a difference.”

II. Rules for the Soulwinning Booth workers.

1] Dress code:

Ladies: No pants, shorts, minny skirts, or tight dresses.

We prefer dresses over culottes. Some culottes look like dresses(okay) some do not(not okay). If it is questionable don’t wear it. No slits or other revealing styles. No heavy makeup. We teach that women should have long hair. If the haircut looks like a man’s you must wear a cap.

Men: No earrings, necklaces, bracelets, shorts, long hair, or tight pants. No makeup.

General: No T-shirts with worldly decals, sports teams, or promotions. Christian T-shirts are okay. I recommend wearing tennis shoes since you may do a lot of standing. You may dress casual. Please have clothes clean and neat.

2] Hygiene:

You must take a shower the day you are working. If you work an outside job you must take a shower before you come to help. All men and ladies must wear deodorant or anti-persperent. Hair must be combed.

3] Behavior:

If a child is with or close by a parent, you must ask the parent’s permission to talk to the child. Respect parental authority. If a parent says they want their children to leave let them go regardless where you are at with them.

Shake hands only.

Never hug anyone intentionally.

Do not touch a child intentionally.

Always keep a smile on your face and be enthusiastic.

Never be disrespectful or rude.

Never leave the booth to give out a tract unless someone asks for it.

Do not pass out tracts from the booth. If someone wants a tract they can get one off of

our table. If someone comes up to the booth but doesn’t want to listen, you may persuade him to take a track by handing it to him. The whole point here is that we don’t want the festival grounds littered with our tracts. I have found that it gets the festival workers mad and it wastes the donator’s money.

Never leave the booth to persuade someone to come in.

Avoid arguing.

Do not spend more than 5 minutes arguing with someone.

If someone wants to argue and you think it is worthwhile get his/her phone number or give them your phone number and talk about it later.

No street preaching from the booth.

Do not preach to vendors next to or across from you unless they ask you first.

Respect the rights of the vendors, especially those next to or across from you.

Keep your noise level down to where you do not distract customers away from other booths.

If you have problems with other booths first try to talk to them politely and if you can’t get it resolved tell the manager.

4] Only the King James Bible is used and tracts that are pre-approved.

5] We only work with Independent Baptist Churches(KJV-only, non-charismatic, separated, non-ecumenical, local church, etc.).

6] When winning a soul to Christ, though we use displays to get people to come to our booth, we do not use positive psychology or pressure techniques to get a sinner to repeat a prayer so we can get a number. If a person doesn’t understand, seems disinterested, or doesn’t agree with basic salvation doctrine, we just give them a tract and tell them to go think about it and come back if they have anymore questions. We just tell it like it is and leave the results up to God. We don’t require people to present the gospel exactly like we do it. We just provide an environment to help people witness and if needed provide training to make people more effective. If we win a soul to Christ, we give them some good literature to take home and get their name and address if they are interested in a visit from an independent Baptist church.

7] We believe a sinner must understand and receive the gospel.

The person must be convinced he is a sinner.

The person must believe there is a heaven and a hell.

The person must believe he deserves to go to hell.

The person must be sorry that he sinned and willing to change(repent).

The person must believe Jesus is God in the flesh, died on the cross for his sins, and

rose from the dead three days later(gospel).

The person must receive the forgiveness of Jesus(faith).

When a person gets eternally saved, Jesus washes all of his sins away by His blood

and he is born again by the Spirit of God.

We use pictures and ask questions before and after we lead them in a prayer to make sure they understand. If they understand and acknowledge that they have received, then we give them assurance(See section, How to win a soul to Christ).

8] Our goal is to win souls, train people how to win souls, and build up the local church. We also would like to help other churches start their own independent festival/fair/flea market ministries. I realize that not everyone will dot their i’s and cross their t’s like us. However, our ministry policy is that you have a right to disagree, but you do not have a right to teach your disagreement. We will work with you if you will work with us. We are not perfect either. Anyone of any age(including kids) are welcome to come help regardless of their experience.

9] Workers who are children (under 16 years old) must be pre-approved and have a parental permission form filled out before they can participate. Below is a sample parental permission form.

9] WE WILL NOT SACRIFICE OUR MINISTRY OR OUR RIGHT TO PREACH AT THE FESTIVALS/FAIRS/FLEA MARKETS FOR ONE WORKER WHO DOES NOT ADHERE TO POLICY!!!!!

10] We keep our booth clean. We pick up paper and any tracts that we see on the ground. The displays used in the booth are cleaned daily as needed, kept in good condition, and painted as needed. We keep the tables as neat as possible and keep the tracts straight and secured by rubberbands(Wind can be a problem).

III. Supplies needed for the soulwinning booth:

1] For the outdoors, a 10X10-foot tent(Sam’s wholesale sells EZ popup tents). One additional sidewall and four sandbags can be purchased from the EZ Tent Company and sand can be purchased at any sand & gravel company. A strong wind can blow over and destroy a tent in one gust so make sure your tent is properly grounded.

2] For a storefront, a 12X10-foot tarp is needed with clips or twine to keep the rain and sunlight out of your space. Tarps can be purchased at any Loews.

3] When leaving belongings out overnight one should get a 8X10-foot tarp with clips or twine and cover all the booth objects. Do not leave high price items in your booth overnight. Patrons will steal. If the weather will be windy and/or rainy at night, take all your belongings with you. Bad weather will destroy your belongings.

4] When at a festival, noise is a problem. A 40-watt amplifier, a 50-watt speaker, and a tape deck should be used(All can be bought at Radio Shack) to amplify your sound loud enough to overcome surrounding noise. A 3-watt radio/cassette(Sold at Wal-Mart) will work at a fair inside a building or at a flea market. Get batteries in case the electricity fails. I use a taped message to get people’s attention. I do not play it continuously, but only when people are walking in front of my booth. I do not use it to distract patrons from other vendors. It is not louder than any surrounding noise. Avoid using your voice or shouting. One can burn his voice out in a day. Save your voice for soulwinning. Drink distilled water during and in between witnessing to keep your throat from getting sore. Though not necessary, it is good to have a backup soundsystem ready in case the first one breaks while at the soulwinning booth. Have something to cover your audio equipment while in use during rain. When patrons or neighboring booths get too loud and/or rowdy it is best to shut your booth down until a more convenient time.

5] During a festival, play gospel music at normal listening levels in your booth. This will help the worker not to be distracted by the festival music.

6] Have a 100-foot thick orange extension cord with a multiplug adapter for indoor fairs and flea markets. Have an additional 100-foot thick orange extension cord with a multiplug adapter, four yellow clipon lights, and four 9-foot extension cords for the festivals.

7] Have eight chairs, four 34X34-inch card tables, two displays, several tract titles, mailbox club cards(for free Bible courses through the mail or internet), decision cards(to get names and addresses of those who want a visit), web cards(use your own website or use other good websites that promote true Christianity), three KJV Bibles with picture illustrations, and two small fans for warm weather. When using the two displays(see display section), only two 34X34-inch card tables are needed.

8] Bugs can be a problem at night at the festivals, so we just use four clipon yellow colored lights and project the light into the top of the tent and keep the sidewalls down to limit the number of bugs in the booth. When the bugs take over shut the booth down.

9] Have two signs taped on the front two card tables saying ‘FREE’.

10] Have two 6-inch stools for the Big Display(see photo below).

11] Bring a broom to keep your booth clean.

12] Have a quart of paint and a 2-inch brush to keep displays looking clean in between soulwinning events.

13]Make sure all the supplies you bring fit in your vehicle before you travel. Remember you may have to bring a passenger and luggage with you. Plan ahead.

IV. Displays used in the soulwinning booth:

We use two displays. Normally, I use the box and the 3-door unit together or the two Big Displays together. We also have a banner with two signs, etc. No one says this is the only way to do it. It works for us. Use something that will work for you whether our way or your own way.

1] The box(A 12X12X12-inch box with a 12X12-inch sign attached. To build one, see construction section).

A] We have a skull nailed to the bottom of the box inside. The top has a hole cut out with a transparency over it. The sign says “Where will you be when you look like this? We put the same message in Spanish in front of the box. We have a night light in the skull box so it can be seen at night. We recommend this for the fairs and festivals but not the flea markets.

B] We have a mirror glued to the bottom of the box inside. The top has a hole cut out with a transparency over it. The sign says “See who Jesus died for?” We put the same message in Spanish in front of the box.We recommend this for the fairs and flea markets but not the festivals.

2] The 3-door unit(A 16X36-inch display with a 12X30-inch sign(or a 12X15-inch sign if not bilingual). To build one, see construction section).

We have a sign with a question with three answers in it. There are several variations. One can create his own ideas if he wishes.

1) See 3 things God cannot do! Open the doors.

A] God cannot lie. Titus 1:2.

B] God cannot change. Malachi 3:6.

C] God cannot let any of us in heaven unless we are born again. John 3:3, 5.

2) See 3 things not found in heaven! Open the doors.

A] Sin. Revelations 21:27.

B] Satan. Revelations 20:10.

C] Unsaved. Revelations 21:24.

3) See 3 things God does not know! Open the doors.

A] God does not know anyone that has not sinned. Romans 3:23.

B] God does not know anyone he does not love. John 3:16.

C] God does not know anyone who could not be saved. Romans 10:13.

4) See 3 things that happen when Christ returns! Open the doors.

A] The dead in Christ will rise. IThes. 4:16.

B] Christ will come down from heaven. IThes. 4:16.

C] Born-again believers will meet the Lord in the air. IThes. 4:16.

5) See 3 things that will not get you into heaven. Open the doors.

A] Good works. Titus 3:5.

B] Baptism. ICor. 1:17, 15:1-2.

C] Religion. Mark 7:7-9.

3] The Big display(26X36-inch display with 30X26-inch sign attached. To build one, see construction section).

A] The question millions cannot answer? If you died today are you 100% sure you will go to heaven.

B] The answer millions cannot question? “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6.

V. Things to put on the backdrop of your booth.

1] The banner has the church name on it. We use

New Life Ministries presenting

JESUS

A ministry of Temple Baptist Church, Lafayette, LA.

2] We use 2 12X15-inch signs with a riddle on it. Here are some ideas.

A] What is bigger than God,

Worse than the Devil,

The dead eat it, and

We die if we eat it to? {The answer is nothing.}

B] What had a life,

Gained a life,

Lost a life, and

Still had life? {The answer is the whale that swallowed Jonah.}

C] What have you

seen that God

has not seen? {The answer is someone older than yourself.}

D] What man-made

thing is now

in heaven? {The answer is the nail marks in Jesus’ hand.}

E] Are you 50, 75,

or 100% sure you

would go to heaven?

After the patron looks at the displays we ask them ‘If you died today do you know for sure you would go to heaven?’ If they say no we ask them ‘Would you like to know for sure? I can show you from the Bible in a few(or five) minutes?’ If they say yes take them back and witness to them.

VI. How to win a soul to Christ:

There is no canned method to winning someone to Christ. We focus on an interview process where we ask questions to find out what a person does and does not understand. We spend our time on what they don’t understand. We ask the patron for five or a few minutes to explain the gospel. After 5 minutes we continue if they are still interested.

Make sure you are prayed up. Before going to the soulwinning booth event I recommend a person fasts and prays on a designated day. As the patrons walk by pray that God will give you somebody.

Here is what I cover and ask. I use blown up pictures to illustrate each point. I get my pictures out of the One Way Tract by Chick Publications and the Two ways picture. Any pictures that get the point across are good.

1] WE ALL SIN:

Q1. Do you know what sin is? Q2. Have you ever sinned before?

A1. Sin is when you break God’s law. A2. {If yes go to 2], if no go to Q3.}

Q3. Have you ever heard of the Ten Commandments?

Go to Exodus 20:

Q4. Have you ever lied before? Q5. Have you ever disobeyed your parents? (Have you ever got a whipping?[got punished]?). Why? Q6. So are you a sinner?

Go to Prov. 24:9. Q7. Have you ever made a foolish thought? Q8. So are you a sinner?

The Bible says that all have sinned. Rom. 3:23.

2] PUNISHMENT ON SIN:

Q1. There are two places where you can go when you die, you know where they are?

A1. Heaven or hell.

Q2. Do you believe there is a heaven? Gen. 1:1, hell? Mark 9:43-44.

Q3. Do you know why people go to hell?

A3. Because they die unforgiven. Rom. 6:23.

Q4. If you died unforgiven, where would you go? God doesn’t want you to go there.

3] REPENTANCE & SALVATION DOCTRINE:

God wants you to repent.

Q1. Do you know what it means to repent?

A1. It means that, given I am sorry that I sinned against God, I want to change.

Q2. Do you want to change?

Q3. Can God forgive someone who doesn’t want to change? A3. No. Luke 13:5.

Q4 Do you believe that Jesus is God in the flesh? IJohn 5:20.

Q5. Do you believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose again 3 days later? ICor. 15:3-4.

4] HAVING SIN FORGIVEN:

The Bible says in IJohn 1:7 ‘the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.’.

Q1. Do you know how much all sin means? A1. Your past, present, and future sins. All the sins from the time you were born to the time you die.

Q2. If God forgave you of all of your sins, where would you go? A2. Heaven.

Q3. If you got all of your sins forgiven today but you sin tomorrow, would you still go to heaven? A3. Yes. Heb. 10:10.

Salvation and confession are two different things. Confession is something a Christian does everyday to be good. Salvation is something a person receives to have all their sins forgiven to go to heaven.

5] THE BORN AGAIN PROCESS:

Salvation is like a birth. Q1. Do you have a birthday?

Q2. How did you get that birthday? A2. You were born.

Q3. How many times were you born? A3. Once for all. Heb. 10:10.

Q4. If you do something bad tomorrow does that effect your birthday? A4. No.

Q5. Why? A5. Because you were born that way.

In the same way when you are born again into God’s family that never changes. It is not based on your works but on His blood washing away all of your sins including the future ones.

6] RECEIVING FORGIVENESS FROM SIN:

Let me show you how to be forgiven. Go to Rom. 10:13.

Q1. If you were drowning in a pool, what would you tell the lifeguard? A1. Help, save me. And he would save you from drowning. In the same way because of sin you are in danger of drowning in hell. However, if you admit you are a sinner, deserve the penalty of hell, tell God you want to change, ask him to wash away all of your sins, He will do it and you will be born into God’s family, and when you die you will go straight to heaven.

Q2. Would you like to have all of your sins washed away to go to heaven?

I will lead you in a short prayer. I will pray out loud like I want God to do it to me and you don’t have to pray out loud but pray along like you want God to do it to you. Okay? Then let’s pray.

{When praying with the sinner, have breaks{B} in your prayer and repeat it slowly back to yourself like you were doing it}.

Lord Jesus{B}, I know that I am a sinner{B}, I have been bad{B}, and I deserve to go to hell{B}, but I want to change{B}, and I am asking you right now{B}, to forgive me{B}, of all of my sins{B}, by your blood{B}, once for all{B}, so I can go to heaven{B}, Amen.

7] TEST FOR UNDERSTANDING:

Q1. So if you died right where would you go?.

Q2. How about before you prayed.

Q3. Would that ever change?

Q4. Write on the back what you asked God to do when you prayed.
