Guidelines For Creating a Fabric Collection
Your collection should consist of eight different patterns in total, including the design you've already submitted. A loose formula -- from which you are free to depart -- for an effective coordinated print fabric collection (especially for the quilting market) is to include the following:
• A focal design (large scale, multicolor, complex, often includes a combination of motifs from the rest of the line)
• A secondary design (medium scale, multicolor, often includes some of, but not all the same motifs as in the focal)
• Small-scale multicolor coordinate (often isolates one motif found in the focal and makes it an all-over pattern of the single motif or single type of motif)
• Tonal or two-tone or tone-on-tone coordinates (can be any scale – perhaps offer several)
• A mix of geometric motifs and organic motifs (ie, florals and polka dots or stripes)
The prints should feel related to one another, which is most easily achieved by repeating motifs throughout the different designs, but can also be achieved through color alone, with otherwise completely unrelated patterns.
• There should be a variety of scale amongst the patterns.
• There should also be a variety of value amongst the patterns.
• Offer a variety of ground coverage, which means that some patterns should lean towards the full coverage end of the spectrum, with motifs overlapping and covering as much of the surface as possible, and other patterns should be more openly spaced with more ground showing through between the motifs.
When we go into commercial production on a collection we usually run designs in several color-ways and often create several cohesive color stories, but your final collection for this contest should tell just one color story. It should be cohesive and coordinated, while still offering variety.

Modern bedding fabrics with plaids and stripes, flowers and chevrons look dynamic and optimistic. Water color style floral patterns, blurred prints and tender floral designs add softness to modern bedroom decorating ideas, creating inviting and relaxing bedroom decor. Abstract spirograph prints in neutral and bold colors, gray and cream and black and white bedding sets with stripes are latest trends in bedding fabrics and furniture upholstery that offer unusual and interesting interior decorating ideas for 2012.

Art Inspired
Painterly looks was another motif that was seen at the show. Most recently it was spotted on dinnerware and has now transferred over to home furnishings. Tozai's collection with Dransfield & Rossincluded Starving Artist, a collection of decorative accents featuring painterly scenes. Fringe's Florista collection also found inspiration in watercolors, as did Midwest-CBK's
“Tozai
”
Water Color Garden which was inspired by Monet's water colors. At C&F Enterprises, the artwork of Paul Brent was transferred onto pillows and another collection of pillows feature the watercolors of artist Jen Callahan.
- - -
Flower Power
Florals play a big role on the table next season. But they take on a painterly look. Lenox and Mikasaintroduced
“Mikasa
”
several dinnerware collections with this look. Mikasa's Dining Redesigned line featured four new patterns inspired by watercolors: Garden Palette Bouquet, Garden Palette Floral, Garden Palette Meadow and Garden Palette Vine. Wedgwood's Harlequin Cuckoo design finds inspiration in the company's archive pattern books from the early 19th century. Done in four pastel colors - pink, light blue, peach and pale green - the collection also features a painterly look.
And flowers were the main theme at Waterford as well. The company's latest Fleurology collection includes a range of vases with companion glass flowers. The vases are done in a variety of colors adding to the floral bouquet.
Clark also sees florals and floral motifs popping up this season. “They're being explored in depth in textiles and tabletop,” she says. “[Flowers] are incredibly happy. When things get shaky we look for objects that bring us joy,” she explains.

What can you learn from art licensing trade magazines?
An important task in any business is research, research, research. And that is true with the art licensing industry. Art licensing trade magazines are a good source to research the industry. They contain not only articles by industry leaders but they have press releases and advertisements of artists and art licensing agents. All contain valuable information.
There are three art licensing magazines; Total Art Licensing (TAL), Art Buyer (AB) and the newly released Art & Design Licensing Source Book (A&D). They are printed in the UK and also have free digital versions. TAL and AB issues are published in January and in May and A&D is published in May. Note: Advanstar, the publisher of License! Global magazine use to publish the Art of Licensing supplement several times a year but it has not been published recently.
Researching the industry is not just learning how to license art but finding manufacturers that license art, knowing the key players in art licensing, and also knowing your competition. Below are some suggestions on what to look for when flipping through the pages.
Articles
Magazines often contain informative articles about all aspects of art licensing. Articles can range from interviewing licensing experts to recent trends. Also observe the name of the person writing the article and the names of the artist, agents, or manufacturers being interviewed to discover key players in art licensing. To gain more information about art licensing, search the internet for those names and examine other magazines, websites and blogs that the names appear.
Often there will be an article(s) about future licensing show(s). It may include seminars and who is exhibiting. Use the information to help you decide if you want to attend or exhibit in later shows.
Press Releases
1. It does not cost anything to have a press release (PR) published. However, the challenge is getting the publisher to publish it. Read the PRs in each magazine to learn what kind of information should be included in PRs for that magazine. This will help you write one that will be published.
2. Many PRs announce licensing deals. Read PRs to find manufacturers that license art. Then search the internet for their website and look at the art that is used on their products. Decide if your art fits before contacting them.
3. Also look at what style of art and themes have been recently licensed in PRs. This shows what art the manufacturer thinks will sell their products. Use that information when creating new art. For instance, if greeting card manufacturers are licensing art that has simple girly girl themes (high heels, purses and hats) then "maybe" it would be a good idea to have your version of that theme in your portfolio. But keep in mind that what is shown in PRs was licensed about a year ago and manufacturers may be looking for something new by the time you create the same theme.
4. Studying PRs is one way to determine if your art is licensable. Compare your art with the art shown in PRs. Is your art as polished and skilled as art on the products? Have you created themes that are licensable? Read "Editorial: Not all Art is Licensable" for more information.
Advertisements
1. Advertising in licensing magazines is an excellent way to show art. But it is unlikely that you will get a licensing deal strictly from the Ad. Read "Is it Worthwhile to Place Ads in Magazines" for more information. But if you plan to take out a Ad, examine the different Ads to get ideas on how to layout your Ad. Note: The cost for a half page Ad in the magazines mentioned above is about $300.
2. Look at the art themes pictured in the Ads to see what themes artists are creating. If the same theme is in multiple Ads, then most likely it is one that many artists think are licensable. For instance, Santa and snowmen in Ads are usually prevalent because manufacturers need them each year for their Christmas products. Also look at what themes are missing. It could mean that they are not licensable but it could also mean that you will be the first to create it for licensing.
3. Knowing your competition is important in any business as it is in art licensing. For instance, if you are a fine art painter, then your competition will be other fine art artists. Looking through art licensing magazines will show you who they are. These artists are already established in art licensing and competing against them in getting licensing deals is very difficult. By examining their art, think of ways to differentiate your art from them. For example, create licensable themes that they do not have.
As mentioned above, the three art licensing trade magazines are Total Art Licensing, Art Buyer and Art & Design Licensing Source Book. View recently published digital issues "Summer / Fall 2011 Total Art Licensing" and "Summer 2011 Art & Design Licensing Source Book" to see the latest in art licensing. The latest issue of Art Buyer will probably be soon published

\Using categories to divide your photographs by type is a great way to make it easier for visitors to navigate your site, especially as your portfolio of images continues to grow. For example, as you categorize photos as “Travel” or “Black and White,” you can then add those category pages to your site’s navigation bar. If you’re using your photo blog to generate business as a photographer, this means that someone who’s looking for some black and white images can easily take a look at your gallery of black and white photos. This guide explains how to add categories to your post, and you can follow these steps to add those category pages to your site’s menu.
When displaying a series of photos, you’ll see that there are a handful of options for inserting them into your post: slideshow, gallery, and individual images. If you’re adding a large amount of photos to a single post, you may want to consider using the gallery option. Too many photos on the front page can cause a slow load time for visitors. By loading your posts as thumbnails first, visitors get the full effect of the breadth and variety of your photographs at a single glance. If you’re looking for feedback, visitors can comment directly on your photo by clicking on the “Permalink” button in the gallery carousel.
very interesting and creative photo and art drive blogs.

Categories-re each post Larger scope than tags (sometimes can appear under both)
Ex: If I say in my blog.for example “ I baked cookies for Surtex”.
Then Category is Surtex cookies
Tag would be: cookies
Tags show up in google People will be directed to the post that mentions cookies.
Tag is Empire State Bldg. Anyone googling that in will be directed to the post on our blog that mentions Empire State Bldg.
Categories –Only add something as a category if I am writing about it in my post.
Joanna suggests that your blog be:
One part entertainment ex: what I ate for breakfast-photos and how I made
One part inspirational – how I made food look like Disney characters
One part educational – ex nutrition value of foods

Watercolor looks are making a splash on fashion, eye make-up trends, hand-painted wedding stationery, bedding and all manner of home textiles. This fluidly romantic painting style is perfect on plates as well. The unstructured, yet naturalistic, flowers and leaves on this "Watercolor Petals" salad plate by Shelley Hesse for Anthropologie are charming with na ïf elegance. Like a painter working from a palette, I'd mix the colors in these quasi-transparent brushstrokes with other solid color or banded dishes to make my own table setting work of art.

Blocks Tell a Story: Creating Narratives in Space and Time
Led by toy designer and educator Karen Hewitt of Burlington, Vermont–based Learning Materials Workshop, these two workshops and drop-in activities invite visitors to channel their inner sense of creative play to design their own stories and reinvent their urban landscapes with building blocks.
Workshops begin with a brief visual tour of the history of building blocks as a learning tool from the 1850s to the present—from Friedrich Froebel to computer Smart Blocks. Participants then create narratives using only blocks. Without the aid of figurative miniature objects, the blocks must be used creatively to symbolize objects, people, and animals. Participants’ narratives will be documented and shared.

Can Food Be Art?
Artist Nancy Hwang has been engaged in making communication-based participatory art projects, and she proposes that food—cooking with strangers and sharing their recipes—can be a good way to get to know one another on an intimate level. Following a brief introduction to previous works by Hwang, audience members are invited to share their childhood food memories to open up a conversation. This participatory talk is open-ended, much like Nancy’s own performance work.
Nancy Hwang has been producing audience-participatory projects in galleries, museums and public spaces over the last fifteen years in North America, Europe and Asia. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland.
Midori Yamamura, Ph.D., is Visiting Assistant Professor in the History of Art and Design at Pratt Institute and a Lecturer at the Museum of Modern Art. She is the author of Yayoi Kusama: Mirrored Years (2009) and a contributor to the Whitney Museum exhibition catalog, Yoyoi Kusama (2012).
