Essay Question (choice)

Please note that this is a test essay not a formal one – don’t stress over it. No references are needed – use your notes (either Option) and your own knowledge (Option 2). Ask for help in advance if you are concerned. There will not be an essay on the physical anthropology test(.

Option One

Pick any two theoretical perspectives and compare and contrast them

Potential Thesis…

The Anthropological theory x and theory y are both ways of looking at and understanding or describing culture. In some ways they are similar and then in others they differ.

Intro paragraph – define and describe each of the theories and include the thesis

Body par 1) – describe and discuss the ways in which these theories are similar (use examples to help clarify) *

Body par 2) – describe and discuss the ways in which these theories are different (use examples to help clarify) *

Conclusion – summarize the two theories and how they are similar and different

* each of these or either of these could easily be two paragraphs depending on how much you want to include (I could see how you might use 1 for similarities and 2 for differences)

Option Two

Pick any other country that you know something about and compare and contrast the culture to Canada, using the characteristics of culture.

Potential Thesis…

All cultures can be understood by examining the main characteristics common to every culture. These include aspects of behaviour, knowledge and beliefs, and material culture. Canada and X are similar in some ways and differ in others.

Intro paragraph – list and describe the characteristics behaviour, knowledge, and material culture and include thesis

Body par 1) – describe Canada in each of these three areas using specific examples from each

Body par 2) – describe Country X in each of these three areas using specific examples from each

Body par 3) – discuss how these countries are similar and how they differ

Conclusion – summarize the cultures and how they are similar and yet different
