Howard Gardner devised his “multiple intelligences” theory under the premise that individuals can show strength or weakness in various intellectual capacities. He theorized eight intelligence categories which will be examined below. For each intelligence, mark an “X” next to statements that apply to you.

Visual/Spatial Intelligence

___ I can mentally rotate objects in my mind.

___ I enjoy the challenge of figuring out how to space furniture in a new room.

___ I remember faces more accurately than names when recalling someone.

___ I enjoy painting/drawing.

___ PowerPoint presentations help maintain my interest during lectures.

Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence

Logical/Mathematical Intelligence

___ I prefer specific step-by-step instructions when completing a project.

___ I like to make “to do” lists.

___ Being an engineer or an accountant sounds like a possible career for me.

___ I am frustrated by people who are disorganized.

___ Math classes are not intimidating to me.

___ I like having a structure to follow every day.

Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence

___ I like working with my hands or with tools.

___ I partake in at least one athletic sport or club at school.

___ I prefer hands-on activities in school rather than lectures.

___ Dancing in a club on a Friday night sounds fun to me.

___ Demonstrated instructions are easier for me to understand than verbal ones.

___ I often use body language to help communicate when speaking.

___ I constantly fidget (tap desk, bump knee, etc).

___ I am comfortable with handshakes and hugs as forms of greeting.

___ If I’m not constantly moving, I get bored very easily.

Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence

___ I can easily keep a beat.

___ I carry my iPod (or other music player) with me wherever I go.

___ I always select music classes in my schedule when choosing electives.

___ I play a musical instrument or enjoy singing.

___ I can identify rhythm in poetry or other written work.

___ I would rather attend a musical than a dramatic play.

___ Memorizing song lyrics comes very easy and natural for me.

___ When listening to a music performance, I can easily tell when a note is off key.

___ I often have a song “running through my head” that I can’t make stop.

Interpersonal Intelligence

___ I would much rather spending time interacting with friends than being alone.

___ Study groups work better for me than studying on my own.

___ Having a “significant other” in my life is a top priority for me.

___ I belong to multiple clubs or organizations in school.

___ I am very sympathetic to the moods and thoughts of other people.

___ People often come to me for help with their problems.

___ I think I would be a good salesperson, teacher, counselor, or consultant.

___ I’m often the leader in group projects or social gatherings.

___I prefer being in a “traditional” classroom compared to taking an online class.

Intrapersonal Intelligence

___ I regularly write in a journal or diary.

___ I prefer individual over partner or group projects.

___ I would have no problem attending a movie or concert alone.

___ I’m very aware of my own strengths and weaknesses.

___ If necessary I would be able to advocate for my political or social beliefs.

___ I learn from my mistakes and don’t repeat them.

___ Sometimes I enjoy just spending a weekend alone by myself.

___ I am a perfectionist and need things to be “just right”.

___ I often engage in metacognition (thinking about my own thoughts).

Naturalist Intelligence

___ Gardening is one of my hobbies.

___ Preserving the environment is one of my core political beliefs.

___ The classification system of plants and animal species makes sense to me.

___ I believe animals have just as much right to life in this world as humans do.

___ I enjoy taking natural science courses in school—biology, botany, zoology, etc.

___ I get annoyed when people throw paper away instead of recycling it.

___ I spend the majority of my free time outdoors.

___ Listening to “nature” sounds (such as waves or bird noises) relaxes me.

___ Some of my favorite activities include hiking and/or camping.

Existential Intelligence

___ I enjoy having philosophical debates with my peers.

___ I have, or would like to, take(n) a psychology or philosophy course some day.

___ Being religious, or at least being aware of different religions, is very important to me.

___ I believe knowledge of history is important to future actions (or lack thereof).

___ I engage in relaxation or meditation exercises.

___ I wonder what the meaning of life is.

___ It is important for me to leave a lasting legacy behind when I die.

___ I wonder if other life forms besides humans exist or have existed before.

___ I would like to travel and learn about different cultures during my lifetime.

Bodily/Kinesthetic measures your awareness and control of motor functions, communication through body language, sports performance, hands-on learning, etc.

Logical/Mathematical measures your reasoning and thinking skills, ability to handle math problems, conceptualization and analytical thinking ability, etc.

Verbal/Linguistic measures your mastery of language and communication, writing and speech, etc.
