Dear Parents,

This is your child's Summer Math Packet which has been designed to keep students' math skills sharp during the school vacation. The problems in this packet have been chosen to reinforce math concepts and skills learned in grade 3. Completion of this work will prepare your child for grade 4 mathematics in the fall.

This math packet includes the following two components: ? Basic fact practice ? Problem solving

Please monitor your child's progress to ensure the work is completed on a weekly basis, not the day before school begins in September. While completing the problems, students need to show all mathematical thinking and write answers clearly.

Completed packets are due on Friday, September 2. and should be handed in to your child's new homeroom teacher. Your math specialist will record the names of those students who completed the packet.

Don't forget: simple board games such as Chess, Checkers, Yahtzee, and Monopoly, and card games like Setback, Crazy Eights, and IJno are fun ways to promote mathematical thinking.

Your support in helping your child retain his/her math skills is essential! Have a safe and wonderful summer.

Critical Math Concepts for Grades 3 and 4

In Grade 3, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100; (2) developing understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with numerator 1); (3) developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area; and (4) describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes.

In Grade 4, instructional time should focus on three critical areas: (1) developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends; (2) developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers; (3) understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry.
